I have some Comp 980's I want installed. I am debating whether to attempt it myself. I was just wondering who could do this and what is the going rate?

Thanks,
Ross

Ross,

It's pretty easy if you have the right tools. I did my GN's springs when I first got it (first time job - about 3 hours). If you decide to do it, send me your postal addy and I'll lend you my "tools".

  • valve spring removal tool (I made mine from an old dead rocker arm by cutting out the valve tip end and welding a piece of 3/8" pipe nipple on the other end)
  • use one of your rocker shafts for the pivot
  • a handle made from 1/2" bar stock (a 45 bend on one end and a 90 on the other)
  • a magnetic probe for removing the keepers
  • either an air chuck or piece of rope to hold the valves
  • just the usual hand tools on top of that

It's a pretty easy job. I have a tool that is designed for that exact purpose. I work in the Bellaire area if you want to stop by your free to use it. If you have access to a air compressor I also have a way to inject compressed air into the cyl. to hold the valves closed. I've done it this way a bunch of times it's a snap.
Let me know.

Ross I live in Deer Park , I don't have the tool , (borrowed one to do mine) but do have the air compressor and fittng to inject air into the cylinder and magnet for keepers. would be willing to help, or loan fitting. I remove the inner spring on my Comp 980's and no problems after 3000 miles.
