Ive just recently heard that when replacing the valve springs on our cars, you should not go with the popular ls1 springs because they were out the stock cam. Is this true? I need to replace the spings on my car, and I bought the ls1 springs, but have not put them on yet. If it is true, what springs should I put on?

I think the concensus here.... is that for stock or very mild hyd. flat tappet cams.... that the Comp 980's w/o re-using the stock spring cups work fine.

Which LS1 springs do you have? brand and part #? Some people here have used them on hyd. roller cams with success... but you have to use a stepped retainer and keeper to get your installed height correct. Others say stay away from them. I kinda like them myself... but not needed for a stock or mild hyd flat tappet cam. The 980's are much cheaper too. Like $50 for the whole set.

Comp 980's all the way. With the stock cam you don't want anything with more than 85 lb pressure at installed height. From what I remember the 980's with the internal dampeners only measured in at about 78-80 lbs, if you keep the cups then its about 82-84 lbs.

The advertised spring rate for CC980's was (a couple years ago) 307 lb/in. The stock cups are about .030" thick...so keeping the cups adds about 9 lbs of spring load.

I would recommend 980's and no cups....

Alright, thanks guys. Do any of our vendors sell the comp 980 springs? Ive only seen them sell the ls1 springs.

I hope so and I'd sure try to find one of our vendors with them first...but if you have no luck you can get them directly from Comp Cams.

Yes, this is something that alot of folks don't think about because you may be able to get a part a few dollars cheaper at the massive Wally Worlds of auto parts mail order places (probabvly not after they tack on their high shipping and handling costs) but not buying parts from TR vendors means one less sell for them, and soon may go out of business....why should that concern you...well, these are the guys that continually refine and make TR specific parts for our cars, and develop new parts for us as well...without them we are left with the same old parts of yesteryear to deal with...if you can find them.
