I need some feed back on the directions from precision industries for the vigilante converter. They say that you should have at least a 1/16 of a inch clearance between the converter and the flex plate. And no more than an 1/8. And to shim the converter to get it closer. Wouldn't shiming it make it farther away? Or is it a miss print and they mean clearance between the converter and the transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What they are talking about is the clearance between the converter mounting pads and the flexplate mounting surface. First, you need to push the converter all the way back into the transmission.

Now measure the gap between the pads and the flexplate. Shims will take up excess slack so that you can achieve the recommended clearance. (They are recommending 1/6"-1/8" which is a bit tighter than the 1/8" -3/16" we at TCI recommend.)

Thank you I appreciate the help. What would happen if the converter was bolted right to the flex plate?

If the clearances are in spec, it should be bolted direct.

If the clearance is greater than the 3/16 that MEANBUICKS recommends and you bolt it together then there may not be enough of the converter engaging the pump and may actually ruin the pump. Simple thing to check and correct and not worth damaging the trans and converter over.
