please help a brotha out - I do not own a buick - but wanted tips from experts in the turbo field, so if this must be deleted, please feel free.

I have a 98 camaro w/ an LS1. I want to fab up a small turbo system that would gain me apx 100 hp. Whats the cheapest, but still efficient way I could do this? I really do not want to spend more than 1k ( ok - you can quit laughing now)....am I smoking crack or can it really be done. My only other option is a nitrous express wet kit, but I would like the power to be there all the time. BTW, the 1k price tag will not include a bigger fuel pump and injectors.

current mods in case it matters:
228/224 comp cam on a 112
home ported heads w/2.02 valves
RAM clutch
9" rearend w/spool
lots of little bolt ons
410hp/403tq at the wheels

Thanks in advance for any help fellas:)

Go for the nitrous, gonna cost between $3-5k minimum to put a turbo on a ls1 and then it will probably have to be rebuilt in less than 20k miles. Boost and high compression don't mix too well, especially on a budget. You'd be lucky to get headers that will work for a turbo for less than $1000. Add in the turbo $1200, fuel and boost management, computer management etc its not something you can do on a budget.

Look up STS turbo, they have a budget kit that looks weird, but does seem to work, but I think its close to $3500.

I can have all the piping and headers work done for free (guess I should have said that - sorry)

I didn't know if I could get 5-6psi boost from a stock turbo from a GN or anything like that? I also know tuning is a must, but thats a none issue as well for me. my concerns are the main pices. I saw an article in chevy high performance where he built a tin turbo for $800 (not including the intercooler) and didn't know how much of a reality that actually was.

So you guys don't think it's possible really?

A friend of mine build's F Body turbo system's.A few year's ago he built his own for around $1k.It can be done if youre a good enuff welder.

I really do not know what I need...can you guys give me a break down?

obvious things are turo (what kind I have no idea), wastegate, intercooler, and various piping. can you guys fill in the blanks for a newbie?? please??? :)

A stock GN turbo will probably make less power than what you are making now. The stock GN turbo is good for about 350 HP at the wheels max. I am sure that the stock exhaust on the GN turbo will choke the crap out of your engine.

As a small upgrade, you would be happy with a GT61. It will get you 500 to the wheels and spool STUPID fast on your combo.

Have fun trying to get traction!!

What you should do is get a good sized turbo GT70+ and keep the boost low. That way when you get tired of making 500 HP at the wheels, you just need to turn the boost up a bit. It will still spool well too!!

If your looking to keep it cheap and make good power, use the Tial wastegate, with Tial BOV and a Master Power T70 turbo or Master Power GT45. The 70 will spool very quick and still give you enough room to grow up to a certain point beyond that the GT45 would be better suited. Both are priced much better then comparable PTE, T-netics, ITS units
