Hey guys, I replaced my turbo early this winter with the TA 49, since I am just getting into tuning this car I have a question, I am sure I know the answer but would like your input... How much should the rod move on the solenoid?? My boost is set at 14psi right now. I pulled the Downpipe off to see if the puck was set and by the carbon around it suggested that it was, Is it time to get a new wastegate??? Thanks for your help in advance! Mike.

I'm just a tad confused, but will make an assumption... there is a WG solenoid (mounted on the passenger side valve cover - no rod) and there is a WG actuator (mounted to the turbo - rod to puck arm). I'll assume you are talking about the actuator:

I've never had my head under the hood of a TR going full boogie boost, so I don't know how far the rod moves, though I don't believe that is pertinent to your question. Sounds like you are concerned with "is it working", which I believe it is because you didn't mention any symptoms to lead me to believe otherwise.

There should be a ring of carbon around the puck contact point because the puck is closed when you are not in boost and the exhaust gasses will swirl around in there a bit... nothing to worry about there. And if your actuator setting has the boost going to 14 and it doesn't creep up, then all is well with your actuator and no need for a new one.

you are right Dean, I did mean my bloody actuator rod. I made my own adjustable two years ago and since swapping to the turbo I have now it seems to be a little loose on the puck side at idle I hear the puck wiggling, Thanks agian for your help,

Mike

If it is loose enough to rattle, but you still get 14psi, you may have a high boost actuator on there. If that is the case, if you snug it up your boost will probably be too high for 91/92 pump gas. It shouldn't rattle as that would bleed off pressure and throttle response would be lagging. How does it run when you mash it?

Hi Dean, thanks for your help! I am sure that the actuator is the original. I snugged it up with new jam nuts and so far no rattles, Though my boost is a little higher now around 16 psi on 94 octane, Should I just go get a new actuator?! Thanks again,

With 94 you shouldn't have a worry @ 16psi. As for replacing it, that's up to you. If it really is original, the diaphragm will fail sooner than later, so it may be prudent. If you decide to purchase another one, consider a high boost actuator. That's what I went with when I had a 49 and was concerned about cranking down on the actuator so hard.
