i bought an 87 we4 a couple months ago, alot of it was taken apart,it needs alot of work,i was thinkin about selling it and when a guy came to look at it,it wouldnt start, turns out the positive cable was burnt on the downpipe, well i fixed that and put a new solenoid in it,it starts and runs now,i havent driven far cause its not registered, but it seems like it doesnt have as much sack as my stock 85 did, when i punch it it takes off pretty good, smokes the tires and everything when i let off the gas it makes a loud sound like a "whhooosh" not like a blow off vavle on a fast and furious type of car its deeper sounding,is this normal?i have never driven any other ic cars, just the hotair that i sold to get this, also somebody put on a vaccum master cylinder, this wasent working great,i mean it did work, but whenever i hit the breaks it would make the car die or almost die, like a big vaccum leak,so should i get a powermaster or a vaccum pump to run this, what would be cheaper?right now its just manual brakes and that sucks, also the car smokes alot,i cant tell if its oil or steam or both,i think i should just get the heads rebuilt and do the gaskets, how much does a stock rebulid on heads go for?any good shops in massachusetts?the car dosent have a cat on it,and it has dual hooker exhaust,it has a rebuilt turbo and transmission, the motor looks rebuilt too,but i dont have a recipt for it,i need to do alot of body work and some interior work,i really wana make this car screw, all my buddies feared the 85 i want this to be unstoppable!!! any other help with fixing it up would be appriciated also if theres anyone in the area that could help with tuning it i would greatly appreiciate it

sounds like you got yourself a great car! if you can get some decent money out of it i'd think about letting it go. but if you like the we4 and really want to fix it up go for it, it will be worth it!

as for the whooshing sound that woudl be a blow off valve, there are different kinds that sound different. any wastegate has a, i dont' know what to call it, wastegate noise. a ticking, hitting sound. if its a smooth whoosh its a blow off valve, you should be able to see it in the up pipe or maybe the intercooler.

vacume brakes just aren't fun, thats all there is to it. that what i have and i HATE them. i'm going to get a vaccum pump, then it should work good enough, they make around 20" of vaccum, and my engine only makes 15 at the very lowest, and if you want to build up boost and creep into the lights (drag racing) forget about it, you won't be able to stop it once it starts going. a powermaster woudl be great, but it will cost a lot more.

i'd check for turbo play, just take off the inlet bell and wiggle the shaft around, if it moves a lot then you will need to do something to toe turbo. either a new one or replace the seals. that could cause it to smoke. as for not having a cat don't worry about it unless you have to get an emissions inspection, then get one!

good luck and have fun with it!

You guys need to get your brakes straightened out. My Vac brakes work great and I can hold boost no problem with them.

The "woosh" you hear could be a BO valve or it could just be sneeze. either way, nothing to worry about.
Sounds like the car jsut needs a good tune up. Go to www.gnttype.org and do the "spring cleaning". It'll get everything in line.

The smoke, could be alot of things - trubo oil seal, valve guides, rings, head gasket could be to much fuel...

'Woosh' could be comming from a K & N type air filter if you have one, Autozone sells a powermaster brake set up for 150 with lifetime warranty.
