It happens whether the car is in drive or reverse but NOT park. I can hear sort of like a ticking sound and I think its from the trans but don't know exactly where its coming from. Where can it be coming from? I hope its not really bad

I have that same ticking noise also, PLUS it slips in 2nd and 3rd gear. not really slips, but just like it's in neatral until the revs come back down. Pulled the tranny, and nothing visable. Of course I don't know what to look for.

There's a good chance that the ticking noise is either a cracked flexplate or a pulled fin in the converter. Placing the car in Drive and Reverse puts a load on the driveline which can induce the sound you hear.

i don't know anything about 2004r's.:o Where is the flex plate located? Is there anyway I can check the converter?

I thought it was my TC also, so I put back my orange stripe, and the ticking was still there. Pulled the trans out, installed my old working fine when pulled out trans back in, and now 1st,2nd,and 3rd gear fells like the trans is binding, need to get up to 3500 to get it to move. Everything works fine in OD. I'm thinking my the PR is stuck. Any advice?? THanks, Paul

Hawaiian turbo, did you find where your noise was coming from?

I wonder if anyone else here has the same ticking problem when idling in Reverse or Drive.

No I didn't find it. I ended up putting my stock trans back in. I'll probably be taking the race one to my frineds shop to have a look. I'll keep you posted. Good luck with yours

The flexplate, sometimes referred to as a flywheel, is bolted to the crankshaft flange. It provides the mounting surface for the torque converter and has the starter ring gear around the perimeter.

The only way to truly diagnose a potential converter problem like a bad bearing or loose fin is to remove it and have it cut it open for inspection.

I had the ticking noise. I took out the convertor and had it cut open. Cost $50.00 and I had a broken fin just like you talk of. My convertor was reworked for $275.00.

Yeah I was on the parkway today and went for another WOT blast. I let off at 105 mph. Then when I got near my house I decided to stop to listen for the noise and it got a little louder. When I hit the gas a little it got even louder. When I got to the garage I let it idle for like 3 minutes and it quieted down again but was still noticeable.

I wouldn't be doing 105 MPH with a known problem. That ticking is sending metal through your trans. Stop now before it gets real costly and pull it out for inspection.

Guess I'll be taking it easy on the car for now. Good advice intercooler! It'll be a while before I bring my car to ERic Schertz for inspection because I gotta save up some money. I'll post back whenever I get it done. Or I'll just post a new thread. Thanks for the replies dudes!

Gonna bring my car to Eric this week for diagnosis. Just want to update you guys that the ticking noise is no longer constant. Its on and off in gear idling. Another question I wanted to ask was why does the ticking happen only in gear IDLING and not when the car is in motion? Hopefully Eric will tell me its a minor problem.

I've been having the same problem. Didnt have a chance to get to it last week, but this week I do. Can any old shop check the converter? I was recommended to send it to Del Trans, but will any shop do?
-Jeff

Before I drop off my car this Sunday night at Eric Schertz's shop, I want to pull the inspection cover(or is it TC cover?) so it can't hurt to do that. This is the first time I'll be removing the cover so will I be able to see the flywheel or at least part of it and part of the TC? How many bolts are on the torque converter? How do I check if they are loose and need tightening?
