*Warning!* This has nothing to do with Turbobuicks. But I had a good time so I thought I would share my experience hanging out with the Ford Guys
I met up with the SVT club (which I now a memeber
) at FT Devons Air Force Base which has been closed for a few years but they rent the Airstrips to car clubs for Auto X events.
I brought my Lightning and my Stepdad brought his 99 Cobra Convert out to try his frist Auto X as well.
Got there early and watched them design a course with 250 cones crossing 3 runways. When they were done the course was 1.5 miles long! We all walked the course while the Advanced guys explained how to read the cones and gave tips to us Noobs If you have never done it before it just looks like a big mess of cones.
I had an instructor ride with me on my first lap, about half way through the course I was getting the hang of reading the course and had the truck moving pretty good.
I was able to make 8 runs out there learning more each time I did it. Its SOOOO different than drag racing, there is alot more skill involved and handling and braking are needed much more than power. The Lightning would go into a 90 degree corner and I would turn the wheel and it just wants to keep going straight, step on the gas to try and get it around and the tires just go up in smoke. hehehe I had a BLAST though and can't wait for the next event in August.
I took my Stepdads Cobra for a ride around the course and OH MY GOD that car ROCKS out there. I was able to really step the speed up over the Lightning, you step on the brakes and it STOPS and TURNS where its supposed to. I think I had more fun running that than I did running the Lightning 8 times.
The fastest time around the course was 140 seconds, I finished with the Lightning in 157 seconds, ahead of some of the Noob Cobra guys so I was happy
I made it around with the Cobra in 153 with my stepdad in the car, I could have done better but I was learning the car for the first couple gates.
I finished 2nd in my Class 3/4 of a second behind the winner who has been doing this for awhile so I was happy.
At the end of the day I went for a ride in an 03 EVO Lancer, I have to say this car ROCKS. Turbo AWD there is like no Lag and the car just sticks and goes around the cones. Very impressive.
I can't wait to get my TTA back together and go after some Cobras out there
