My paint is about 8 yrs old and took my car to a painter close by who tried a spot and said it had a lot of clear on it and that he could get out the prange peel. He said no higher than 600 taking the bumpers off all the trim , side molding , my friend said if he does a good job it would look like a new paint job what do you guys think is this worth it? It has orange peel on the sides looks ok and has a good shine so would I be wasting my money or would this be worth it just wanted to see what others on here thought about it.

Paint ques?

I'm having my car finished up as we speak. I was in the same, if not worse predicament with my paint job. Over the past 2 months- on and off the car has been wet-sanded, and buffed multiple steps, and now he is putting the glaze on. I am not a paint guy, so this was a learning experience for me. I did need some light touch up of paint is certain areas so all in all I think that I am into it for around 850.00 so far including materials.

Dent guy- 135.00
Paint shop- 550.00
Wet sanding- my time
Buffing- multiple steps- my time (and barter system)
Last polish and glaze- 175

I have brand new Badging for the car and was not going to put it on if we could not save the paint. I also did not want to spend 10-15K on a paint job.

Well, the wet sanding and buffing produced amazing results. My GN looks amazing. If the guy is confident and disciplined in his skills, 600 is well worth it in my opinion. I did all of the trim removal myself and replaced door locks, door handles, antenna nut, and repainted all of the trim with SEM.

Needless to say within an hour I will be applying all of the badging to the car and I am going out cruising tonight with a very shiny car. I'm very excited and it has been a long time waiting.

I know black is hard to photograph, however, i'm not real skilled at posting pic's but if you pm me your cell # I can send you some.

The before and after is amazing. My paint was so bad because of orange peel that you could not see your reflection, now I can use it as a mirror. Hope this helps with your decision.

Good luck with your endeavor,

Busyman

I would not go by him "trying" a spot and saying it has enough clear. Make sure he does it properly and uses a gauge to measure thickness in different spots. Not all paint jobs have the same coverage in all spots. If he doesnt have a thickness gauge to start with (they are $$$) he shouldnt be offering sanding jobs in the first place.

If measurements look good then yes, $600 is a bargain for a good sand/polish job and yes, it will make the car look like new again.

Good luck.

Should take around 12 to 15 hours to completly do with 2000 grit. at $42.00 per hour you shouldn't have to pay any more then $600.00. I do it all the time. I have one in my shop as we speak. And just finished a 32 high boy that was show quality and i had around 20 hours into it because it had a ton of vents, and it's going to the Nationals this summer.I would do one for $500.00 and still make money. Good luck, i hope he does a good job for you.:)
