What exactly is a Pyrometer used for? ---

Hey guys, my TTA had an Auto Meter Pyrometer installed when I got it. It says it reads EGT degrees in F . Is that Exhaust Gas Temperature?

It usually reads around 800 while driving it around ... is that normal? Are these used for tuning or mainly safety of the engine?

Yes, that is exhaust gas temp.
