I am currently the proud owner of a 84 t type I purchased the car for 1100 dollars and have some extra money to make this car RUN its fastest and i am interested in knowing what is the biggest turbo that can fit it. I am lookin at them know but cannot deside can you please point me in the right direction. Also i was looking at the intercooler kit for my 84 and its a bit pricey at 1300 dollars is there some kind of good but cheaper substitute.

Next year when I have extra money I'm going to get a ta-49c with blue top injectors and a 2800-3000 stall convertor. I'll also have the intake ported. I think they make bigger turbos than this to put in the hotairs this is just what I'm going to go with. Both Limit Engineering and Precision Turbo and Engine are good places to deal with they have awnsered many of my questions.

mine is intercooled , but the turbo is still on top of the motor and i had a ta54 that fit pretty nice. I run the ta49 now.

I've had a 49, 62, and 64 on mine. If you're staying hotair the 62 is the biggest that will fit in the stock compressor housing. If you run an intercooler, with a little intake manifold modification, I don't see why something in the 70 range wouldn't work. My 64 fits fine. If you're looking at the Spearco kit, the stock 87 compressor housing is about the biggest that will clear the adaptor neck in the back of the manifold. I had the 64 wheels in mine for a while and judging from the looks of it that's as big as you can go. For mine, I have a 3" elbow going into the back of the intake and all it took was welding it at a slight angle toward the firewall (which should improve flow) and the 64 clears easily. I have the big Ford intercooler now which cost me $270 new and I made the 3" mandrel plumbing for ~$40 myself out of a prebent tailpipe section. The silicone coupling hoses and heavy duty clamps were another hundred or so. It's definately a do it youself project but the results and money saved are worth it. Especially if you bought the car for such a low price (you have to do a little cutting for the plumbing). I have to say that the little TA49 was the most fun on the street. From light to light the big turbos were too lazy but I was also only running a 2,600 stall convertor. It made enough power to do a 40mph rolling burnout on regular street tires which is plenty for the street. And on tire with good gas and the supporting mods, there's little chance you're going to pull up to something faster at a light just by chance.

BTW, you probably know this already, but do the fuel system mods first or you'll be looking at a new motor.

CrazyGN and Cool84 how fast on the track did you guys go with the ta-49 I was told it would run high 12's mid 13's. Was there to much lag for an everyday driver with the 54 or 62.

I had lots of lag on the street but i ran a 2000 stall so i would not look at mine, other then that it was a nice turbo. The 49 seems to be more fun for the street tho. I hope to run a good 12 sec run now but i will put this thing in the 11's some how with what i have. As soon as i get m trans out of the shop and a new 87 maf i'll get some times.

I went 12.9@110mph with my 49. I know I've said it too many times but the catalytic convertor was plugged and it wouldn't build any boost at the line and 13psi was all it would make up top. Should've been low 12s with the mph it had and would've been in the 11s easily if I could've cranked the boost but I only got one run. People have gone deep in the 11s with them. There was barely any more lag than the stock turbo, not enough to matter. From a roll, you can't tell a difference other than the extra power.

I had the Spearco IC with the 12.9 but it had a lot more in it considering I could've run it on 89 octane at that level.

i dont see why it would not be in the 12's easy , i saw redshotair run 13.0's with the stock 84-85 turbo.

Hmmmmm....

Well, I had a stock 85 turbo - it broke (seized bearings). Then I bought a TA33C form Limit Engineering...I have only had it since end of July - maybe put 100 super light miles on it (if that)....the I got a whine and some sort of external damage to the compressor wheel - which still baffles me 'cause I still cant find the source of it.

Anyway - my car didn't feel any faster with the 33...note I have a stock intake and heads....should it have felt quicker ??? I think so too....

My turbo is now at Limit Engineering getting fixed....GRRRR

Do I see if he will upgrade it to a 49 ? OR do I hog out my intake for better flow ?

I am of the opinion that no matter what size turbo you have pushing boost thru the engine it won't help unless you have a modded intake and maybe heads too.

Hotsix - what kind of boost are you running with the 33? Twins' Ta33 does start making real power till about 17psi - and loves 25psi.

The TA-33 is basically a TA-49 built into the stock 84/5 housings..."almost" the same turbo...

Well

I've had it up to 22-25 PSI or so...it seems to jump right up there when you are into it.

Thats what Limit Engineering had it set for when it was shipped to me originally.

I figure I gotta do my intake - thats whats slowin me down.

I got that out of a stock turbo.

BINGO! that is why you were not feeling a difference with the turbo upgrade.Your motor was not even getting the full benefit of the stock turbo with that restrictive intake,So putting a bigger one on don't help much until the air can actually move in the intake. If you modded the intake and nothing else, then tuned it, you would prolly pick up a second and a half right there. The inlet and outlets are the restriction,no need to go inside unless it is getting the inlet relocated to the top where the "6"is(for intercooling or adding alchy).I proved this to myself on two different 84's with identical motors minus the porting. The unported car was a DOG! And the ported motor was a BEAR!Once you get the porting done in the intake and valve pockets you are ready to do the other mods and will easiliy feel the benefits of them unlike with the stock restrictions. For additional flow you can safely take .012-.014 of material out of the inside of the turbo to intake adapter piece.Don't sound like alot but next to another (stock)adapter, there is a blatant size difference.Good Luck!

I thought they were the same? Just called a ta 33 because it fits the 84/85 application.

Same compressor and exh turbine wheels...Just the 84/5 housings are machined for them...The compressor housings are a little different from the 84/5 to the 86/7...
