what is this wire that's disconnected?

Anyone know what that grey wire is for?

Looks like there has been some rewiring going on in that area and with the picture it is hard to tell. Without stripping away all the tape to get a better look that Gray wire might actually be a pair of white wires that were originally used for a tach signal and are commonly hacked up. Originally they would have had a green spade connector, do you see one of those in the immediate area not captured in the photo?

I think those wires is for your tach if I'm not mistaken but I can verify it when I take a look at my wires to confirm, unless someone beat me to the punch.
