I took all of my mods off of the 84. Back to stock headers, dp, turbo. Injectors are a hair bigger and newer. I can't even go half throttle or over 10 #'s of boost and get serious knock. I know the red's 93 octane chip is fairly high timing. I've tried a thrasher, still no luck. I can dump a bunch of toulene in I can eliminate the knock. I did do the 87 ecm conversion. Should I just find a stock chip? Hate to pay money to reburn one. Someone want to swap?
Just need to get it running good so I can sell and focus on the 87 restoration.
Thanks.

I'm no expert by any means but I had the same thing happen to me and it turned out to be crossed vacuum lines. The two hoses on the waste gate actuator. Might not hurt to look.

I'll check it out. It does spool up unbelievably fast since I put the stock turbo on. Could have got them mixed up.

Just checking. If the thrasher was for an intercooled set up it won't work so well on the hot air. Are you using the same injector you used when you had the chip burnt? Did you get a chance to check the vacuum lines. I know this can be an issue as mentioned.

It probably is one for my 87. I should have keep better notes on these chips. I have one burned for the 84 ecm, I might have to the whole ecm back out.
Also which way do the hoses go from the wastegate and thru the y to the vacuum areas. I do have an aftermarket wastegate with just one vacuum line comiing off of it. The straight part of the y is going to the turbo.

I have the stock wastegate, looking from the front of the car the large vacuum hose coming off of the vacuum block goes to the left side of the wastegate. I'm not familar with the wastegate you have but I know that if you cross these two hose's the motor under any kind of boost has a very violent knock. If you have a serious knock problem I dout that your problem is the chip.
hope this helps... Tim

I finally switched the hoses going to the y on the wastegate. THAT DID IT. No more knock. I also turned the boost down and it looks like I can turn it back up some. I just haven't been driving it much since I'm trying to get the motor back in the 87. I got the Red's 93 chip in it now. It's amazing how the little hoses can make such a difference. I was so sure I had it right the first time, but you never know when you're working on several things at once.
thanks everyone.

I have been watching this thread pretty close and I was gonna keep beating on you till checked those hose's :D Glad ya found it. Do you still have any of the Hi Po parts for sale from the Hot Air car?

Just the blue top injectors. '
I drove it after I switched hoses and got very little to no knock. I adjusted the fuel pressure a little lower, started getting some knock so I turned it back (about 800 o2) (14 #s boost) and still have some knock. But it's not like it was. I might of still had a little toulene left in it.

Mike or Tim (or anyone else!!) can you describe how your vac lines are routed? I know that is probably a big pain in the A$$ but my car seems to be doing the same thing still, and I have the single wastegate. The pics on the hot air sticky don't show clearly how they are supposed to be routed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just took a look at mine. The straight thru part of the "y" goes from the actuator running the wastegate to the selenoid on the drivers side valve cover. The part that y's off goes to the turbo. I'm not sure if that is right but I don't have as much knock, but I barely step on the gas and I get boost.

"The straight thru part of the "y" goes from the actuator running the wastegate to the solenoid on the drivers side valve cover. The part that y's off goes to the turbo. "

My straight through one also goes from the solenoid to the actuator on the valve cover, but my angled one (Y) goes to the throttle body. (on the radiator side onf the TB) The barb on the turbo connects to another fitting on the throttle body. (on the firewall side) This short piece of hose is somewhat crimped too. WTH?

Do you have two barbs on your TB? Where are they routed?

Are you sure your second hose from the Y goes to the turbo barb???

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

squid bring your gn buy and i can fix you vacuum routing.
mike did you get my pm on the turbo for the wheels?

thank keith

Mine is definitely going to the turbo, nothing to throttle body. The two spots on the throttle body are the lines for hot water from motor to warm the throttle body. Since you don't want that heat for performance. You block those lines off and recirculate the water from it's source.

The guy I bought the car from had the y part of the vac line to the throttle body heater passage, then out the other passage to the turbo. STUPID mistake on my part. I could not see the pics very well on the hotair sticky, and there is no one around except you highboost.

But I still have the pinging under load, but it is better. Now it'll boost up to 15, but like I said it pings. It seems to get worse when it warms up. Also, checked the antifreeze level with it running... And I am getting bubbles. Not a good sign, at all.

Looks like I may be pulling the heads off. Can't believe in trying to fix a pinging problem that I blew a head gasket. I was pretty easy on it, but... I guess we'll see.

More to follow.
