Getting ready to by a translator. Which maf to use, a LS1 or a ZO6? I see alot of guys are using LS1 so I really dont know if you can use a ZO6. Help me out!!!

Really just a matter of preferance and the parts you have handy...

Most that run an aftermarket MAF run either the LT-1 or LS1. The LS1 measures 3.5" and is easily found and relatively inexpensive. The Z06 is 3.75" is a little bigger and not as common, unless you are moving ungodly amounts of air cant see it really flowing that much more air than an LS1.

I'd say the LS1, just because it is cheaper and more easily found. Unless you are running an aftermarket engine management system or an extender type chip, your ECU will only read it up to 255 anyway.

Is the LS1 MAF a worthwhile upgrade over stock. I can pick one up for $45. I plan on getting a Gen II translator soon and was wondering what the benefits would be. Sorry for the hijack but it looks like similar info that I needed.

I've always liked the LS1 MAFs... and haven't had one crap-out on me yet. ;)

The reason most switch over to a different MAF is for one of two reasons:
#1 The stock OEM MAF, it is very hard to find a decent replacement. Once your original quits working, you have very few options. I went through about 4 or 5 of the ones you can get from autozone or oreillys before I found a decent one. I wouldn't even try to speculate what a NOS OEM MAF would cost, if you could find one.

#2 With the options available in a MAF translator, you can do a little tuning with them. I havent used the GEN II but with the Translator plus I have, I can add/remove timing and add/remove fuel. I can already do that with the Turbotweak chip that I have, but it seems the changes I make using the Translator plus are more subtle, like fine tuning.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that helps a bunch. I notice some guys are not running a maf but what do you have to do to make that work and is it ok if you are going to drive it some, [sundays, nice days] etc?

What you are referring to is called a Speed Density type setup or MAFless. It works off of the signal from the MAP sensor, be it vacuum or boost. I tried using the MAFTPRO, which can be run mafless, but to be honest it was over my head. I couldn't get the car to even idle right with it even with the help of other board members here.

Alot of aftermarket engine management systems use this setup and can get the absolute most out of an engine possible. But for the average weekend enthusiast/cruiser it is too much and isnt needed. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much! You have answered my question and sounds like that is way over my head! Simpler is better for me!
