What Was The 1" Headed Bolt Used For On The Oil Filter Housing??

Well since it almost rattled free on me while idling on my 3500 mile rebuild I'm curious what the hell it was ever used for?
Is it a V8 left over function like the fuel pump block off on the front cover?

sounds like you are talking about the by-pass

That is the pressure regulator valve, not bypass which is lightly spring loaded disc inside oil filter adapter.
