I drained my trans via the drainplug and i put 4 1/2 quarts back in it. i cant really get a good reading from the dipstick, so what are symptoms of overfilling the trans?? my car gets funny when the converter locks up

If it gets funny when the converter locks up its usually the TCC silonide. Does it feel like its chugging/surging? Theres a plug with 4 wires that goes into the drivers side of the transmission. Unplug it and take the car for a ride in overdrive. If it does not do what it was doing before, acting funny etc... Your torque converter clucth siolide (TCC) is bad. Its a $30 - $35 part from GM and an easy fix. If it stops acting funny unplugged, just leave it unpluged until you can replace the TCC until you will not get as good of gas milage because the converter will not lock up, but it will stop acting funny

If its the TCC you will have to drain the fliud again and take the pan down to change the TCC, sorry.
The trans will typically hold 5 quarts with a stock trans pan on a fluid change. Usually we over fill them a tad to the squigally part of the dipstick totalling the fluid to 5 1/2 quarts or 6 quarts. You do that to keep the trans from sucking air, when you mash on the throttle all the fluid rushs to the back of the pan. The 200 4r filter sucks from the top causeing it to suck air on ocassion. Over filling it a little to the squigally line will solve this problem and will not hurt the trans its acctually better for it air is not good!..........................Hope this helps, Ed

In addition to adding that extra quart of fluid run a bead of rtv around the edges of the tranny filter where the metal and plastic meet. This will keep it from sucking air around the front edge of the filter if the fluid uncovers it.
