Whats a good price for a high mileage '87 GN astroroof??

My buddy is looking at an '87 GN astroroof, 160,000miles, basically good shape for the mileage, decent paint, good interior, no major mods, just a GNX gauge cluster and cold air intake. Its a daily driver and is mechanically sound. Guy wants $6000, worth it? Thanks guys

I would just mention that for $2000 more dollars, you can have a car with less than half those miles. Yes, 2K is a lot more to some people, but if you plan to keep it for a while, or it would be somewhat of a daily driver, the low miles could pay off. Good luck with the decision. Tim

Depends on where the minor rust is and how bad.....

Astroroof and the GNX gauges add about 1K to the car in MHO.

Prolly 5.5K would be what I would want to pay.

If the car is clean enough and runs well enough and has had the oil changed often and the timing chain and valve springs done then maybe 6K if it had the rest of the options I wanted.

Try going to KBB.com and entering the options, etc, to see what the retail values show to be. However, these cars being what they are, usually draw a good bit higher than any of the value ranking services.
I would make sure the astro roof is sound, in that, I've known several people who've had nothing but trouble with em'. Prone to leaking, and often getting off their guide tracks,,, especially when you start launching the car hard and tweaking the body. Just give it a thorough lookover, and like the others mentioned, make sure the bottom of the doors and trunk decklid are not rusting. Check them with the doors open, and feel all around the door skins down low. If it all checks out, then 6k should not be unreasonable. Just tell your buddy that in all likelihood, he will be building a motor soon after, if he plans on running it hard. 160,000 boosted miles is alot on the drivetrain, and if it isn't busted now, it's probably on its last leg if pushed too hard. At the very minimum, it would need valve springs and timing chain replaced, to prolong its life. All this is my opinion though...

160,000 miles if it was well maintained is nothing its just breaking in ...i'd buy that car before any low mileage high dollar garage queen any day i bought my 87 GN w/low miles and paid big $$$$ and had to replace it all and pay more $$$$...chances are the parts have already been replaced on the higher mileage car which means alot less work and more enjoying the car for you I bought my second 87 GN w/high miles and i never have to work on it i just drive it

Tim87TR has a very good point about the spending of a couple grand more for a lower milage car. As long as the milage is accurate , it's tough to argue the fact that miles are miles.There is no guarantee that buying a very low milage car means not working on it. After all, these cars are 15 years old. Everbody seems to be in agreement of the $5,000-$6,000 figure for a car with that many miles, 160,000. Verify the accuracy of the milage and use common sense used car buying tatics . That should keep the playing field level. Drew

Thanks for the replies, I agree on the miles, my GN has over 120,000 and i've had no major problems with it. Yes, i've spent some $$$ on paint and upgrades but I would have probably done the same on a lower mileage car.
