i have been spending endless nights standing in my engine bay and i started looking at the transmission.

i have a floor ****er, so i expect that the shifter linkage wwould be connected directly to that, but i have a solid piece of steel going from the transmission all the way up to the steering column (as if i had a column shifter).

what is goign on? can anyone explain this to me. is the scolumn shifter thing useless? can i take it off???

Very confused.

That rod is used to lock the steering column and operate the neutral safety switch. Leave it in. :)
