whats the diff. in a 84 and 87 gn trans?

i've got a chance to buy an 84 trans cheap and wondering if it will work in my 87.

Yes if it's a BQ code turbo Regal transmission.

the 84 has the smaller 692 servo so be sure to upgrade to a 694 to help the band out.

isnt the valvebody also different?

The valve body differences are minute enough so as to make very little difference overall. As Chris stated, the servo was the most dramatically changed component when the '86/'87 BRF was introduced.
