I have a 35,000 original mileage motor that I'm rebuilding. Twice, I have ordered a new front cover, but upon receipt, I've noticed that quality is not there, so I've sent them both back. One time the machining was awful, the other, porosity was in the metal casting.

I have my original cover, and I have a book that tells me the acceptable clearances for the oil pump housing in the cover. When do you replace one of these? There is some scoring in the pump housing, where it looks like particles went through.

Where is a good place to find a decent aftermarket front cover?

I have returned one cause it had holes in the gear pockets! I have seen some that have verry crappy castings. The last 2 ive done have been much better ones. Just installed one today and it was very nice. I believe there are only one or 2 manufactures tops on these things. You could always get a GM cover.

Louie,

Thanks for the reply. That is the problem that I have in the one I have now, bubbles in the casting. I'm going to send it back, and I may try once again. I didn't realize the GM cover was still available.
