Where did you mount your translator?

I bought the regular translator, not the plus. The wires seemed kinda short. I couldn't even reach the fender to mount it. It may be my setup with the TE60 and solid MAF pipe making it too far away. Anyway, I mounted it on top of the intercooler shroud, ran a couple of short screws through the plastic.

Anyone see a problem with this? What about rain that may come through the radiator? Heat?

Its not a daily driver, so it really never sees rain, except by accident.

It must be your setup because mine made it to the drivers side fender pretty easily. I would worry about heat in the location you have selected. Do you have a pic of your setup maybe?

My T+ didn't seem to have too much slack either, so:

I took the cruise control line bolt cap off (that covers the excess threads from holding the c.c.line down), used a drill to enlarge one end of the T+ box, and slipped that end onto the bolt, using another bolt to gently tighten it down. I swung the box over toward the c.c. bracket and used a zip tie through the other hole to stabilize the unit.

Being the neat freak that I am, I want to put it as out of the way as possible(when I get one) Would it be possible to extend the wires? I know you need access to tune so it wont be totally hidden. Well, maybe.:)

If you're a neat freak (like me with some, but not all, things) they make extension cords to put the box inside the car. I mounted it to the console, by my right calf.

They also make a pricey, but worth it IMO, plug-n-play adapter for the ignition module plug. No cutting or splicing.

This slickest set-up I've seen was mounting it in the glove box. If you release the glove box "tab" and let it droop you can mount it to the back of the glove box using the extension cables.

You won't even see it if you open the glove box normally....release the tab...the glove box droops...and voila!...tune away.

There are some pictures of this on the web somewhere...I think it was TurboDave who has this set-up.

Yeah, my buddy Mike got the extension stuff from Caspers I believe and put it in the car. I didn't buy the "Plus", so I don't care about tuning. I just want to be sure it won't break being where it is.....

Yeah, would have been nice if they made the wires about a foot or so longer. I mounted mine on top of the drivers side fenderwell behind the windshield washer canister. Why not just cut the harness and extend the wires? Little soldering and shrink wrap and your done. Then just put all the wires in some black wire conduit and no one will even know you spliced into it.

I was thinking about moving mine behind the glovebox too whenever I get some spare time.

Most of the ones I've seen were mounted under the hood on the driver's side....sometimes to the inner fender....sometimes just tie-wrapped to the air inlet hose.

It get's pretty hot under the hood and I would be concerned with it getting overheated....the plastic getting brittle....water leaking in it etc.

I thought the extension wires were only $15 buck a piece. You'll need one for the MAF wires and one for the timing wires (If you have the plus). I wouldn't really consider that expensive. Those Delphi connectors aren't cheap.

I like the plug and play. That was another concern that I had, cutting wires. I don't want to cut anything. I like the glove box idea but I already have my crossovers mounted there. I could put it in the glove box though. If the wires reach the console maybe mount it inside the console storage area?

How much adjusting is required once the set-up is dialed in? Is it really necessary to have easy access to it? BTW, I plan on getting the T+.

gn1220,

Take this with a grain of salt since I don't actually have a translator. I've heard that TurboBob sets the extender chips up very well....you are getting an Extender chip with your Trans+ aren't you? Most guys with the regular Translator twiddle with them a little bit at first, but once set up correctly, you pretty much leave it alone.

If you use the Trans+ w/ Extender you'll want to get to it so you can change between street duty and track duty.

Yes, I want to get the whole package. It wil be a while, new baby and Mom at home for a few months, because I want an alky kit first. Just getting facts so I will be ready when the time comes. Thanks for the help.

I adjust mine fairly frequently depending on whether I'm using alky or not. Also, I have 100 octane fuel available at the local Sunoco, so I adjust for that. I usually just screw with the base and WOT timing. Having it behind the glove box wouldn't be any more or less convenient than having it where it is now (on the console).

I have the T+ and Extender with the 98 octane "alky" chip. Bob does burn a mean chip. I really like it. If I turn the base timing back to the "93 octane" recommendation, I can run 20 PSI with 0 knock and 0 retard with 94 octane (no alky). Starts to knock a bit above 20 PSI. I may turn the timing up and the boost down to see what that does for me. Nice to have that flexibility.

Accessability is GREAT. Mounted it upside down so that the wires would exit toward the column and then flipped the cover upside down so that it looks right when mounted. Makes adjusting it a breeze...

Nice, but I've got a rear window defog and RH mirror toggle there.

I had to turn my cover upside down, too, to get the wires running toward the firewall.

What's that above your radio and HVAC controls? Some kind of boost controller?

It's my ANS Knock alert. It's cool 'coz it's audible and visual with toggle switches to turn either on/off. Freakin' sensitive too. Now that I have the SM, I noticed that it activates at ANY level of knock.

Since mine gets tweeked a lot, I mounted mine on the side of the console. See the pics link in my sig, and then peak at the Grand National photo album.

I've got mine mounted where the charcoal canister used to be...great location and no problems.
