Which one controls the boost, wastegate solenoid or wastegate actuator?

If you crank up your wastegate actuator for more boost. Will the solenoid try to over ride the actuator? Since the solenoid is controlled by the computer. And if the two are fighting each other will it cause the boost to spike up and down? Or am I just thinking to much?

kinda sorta....

I think you're giving the computer too much credit. The car does not know how much boost the turbo is making, therefore it will not compensate with the solenoid. The actuator adjustment sets the base boost level, while the solenoid will raise this by bleeding some air off the control circut. How much is determined by the solenoid pulse width programed into the chip.

Don't forget, it pulls some boost whenever there is KR. Nice added safety feature.

I know on my car, it is impossible to go over 17-18psi without the solenoid. Currently the wastegate rod is set for about 13psi which gives me about 18psi with the solenoid. Not a truly linear adjustment though because the solenoid will bleed more air at higher boost levels, so with the wastegate rod adjusted for 16 I would get more than 21psi.

Just think about letting the air out of a tire, it comes out way faster when you have 35psi than it does when you only have 10psi.

Thanks guys, I am just trying to figure out what is wrong with my car. When I got my Regal all of the vacuum hoses were screwed up. Who ever did it ran two hoses to the wastegate solenoid, one on each nipple. Instead of leaving the top side open. I was just trying to figure out how much control the computer had. My problem is that the boost will not stay steady. The boost will go up to 16-17psi. Then it will drop to 13-14psi. Then it will work it's way up again and then drop again. I didn't know if the solenoid would be doing this. Or do I have a problem somewhere else?

just disconnect the solenoid and plug the line and see if it creeps still. i just have a line looped from the compressor to the actuater and i have 19lbs solid. i keep the soleniod plugged in to keep the ses light off.

Thanks Mike, I ran the hose from the turbo housing to the wastegate. Now the boost is solid. But I ran out of adjustment at 15psi. I guess that I will cut some of the rod off to get more boost.

Have you ported the waste gate hole. Creep with higher boost is usually a sign of this. Both items work together to control boost. Also check to make sure that the y is installed correctly and has the right restriction in it. These have been known to be weird sometimes. I had that issue with my 60.

How big should the wastegate hole be. I have never messed with it. It is a Turbonetics turbo.
