whining sound. Bad tq converter?

i was driving around last night and after about 30-45 minutes of driving normal i mash the gas pedal just for a few seconds then let off. i get to the next light and hear a whining/whurring(like a gear drive, bad power steering) sound coming from underneath my car. i pull over and listen for it.

in park or neutral it does not make this sound. i can hear a slight ticking in park/neutral though. the sound seems to be coming from the dust cover area (torqueconverter/flexplate area).

when i put it in reverse or drive, the whining sound starts. this is at a stand still. it gets a little bit louder when i give it gas but easing into the throttle and actually moving makes the sound dissapear. as i come back to a stop the sound will come back. the sound is gone when the car is actaully moving above 5 mph. the car also seems to be sluggish. it takes more force on the gas pedal to get the car up and moving like the tq converter isnt doing its job.

i just got home from slowly driving the car back home and its 1am. i will do some searches in the morning but any help on this thread will be appreciated. i think it may be a loose or pulled fin from the tq converter. i cant really afford to build the tranny "right" at the moment.

What kind of converter? Sounds like you busted off one of the fins and it is wreaking havoc in there. The other possibility is your pump may be bad. When mine did it I had fin busted and lodged in the converter. Pull them now!

its a stock converter.

i guess i will install the spare stock converter.

I hope your plans are to have the converter cut open and see what is going on. Check the trans pan for evidence. I wouldn't go right back in with another converter before nailing the problem. You may have to redo both. BTDT.

the plan is to take the transmission out and bring it to a shop to get built. thatnks for all the help.
