 My 86 has original paint and fillers. The fillers are nice and soft no cracks but they haze up (like you put wax on and did not buff it off) in about a week. What is this and what do you do? The rear cleans up easy but the drivers front takes more rubbing. Tired of doing it over and over again....Thanks

They are on their way out. I don't think there is anything that can be done to keep them from cracking now and from what I have read, painting this is useless. My original 54,000 mile ones are doing the same thing. I have a set of NOS fronts and I bought a set of ABS rears that I will be installing soon when my originals start to crack (which they will).

Here's a pic of the rear fiberglass fillers sitting loosely on my car, not much body work was needed at all, the fit is real nice as well. The only thing I really had to do was put it on my belt sander to clear the gas tank filler neck, the rest was just light sanding and making a few holes oblong. The front's are very nice as well.

Fading Inserts

They are likely on their way out. When I bought my 86 GN with 9000 miles at auction last year, the bumper fillers were shining perfectly except for the front passenger side. I figured I would just have it painted. When I got the car home, I noticed that the driver's side was starting to haze over. A few days later, the rear fillers started to haze. When you rub the fillers, they shine up for a short period of time and then haze back over. Apparently, the prior owner must have buffed the heck out of them right before the auction. I then took the car to a body shop to have all the fillers repainted thinking that they were just fading from age. Unfortunately, after paying $700 to have them painted, a few months later they hazed over again. I can rub them and shine them up but they soon return back to a haze. As such, my assumption is that there is some degredation going on with the fillers from age. Sure enough, the front driver's side recently cracked even though it felt soft and pliable. The car has been in my car for months. Just cracked on its own. Consequently, I wasted $700. I have purchased a new NOS front and rear set for a pretty penny (especially the rears) and will again be paying to have them all painted. I also notice that alot of the low mileage/original paint cars you see advertised online have faded bumper fillers. You have to look close in the pictures but you can see the fading/hazing if you look at the pictures closely. If yours are hazing and can be shined up by rubbing them only to soon return to a haze, in my opinion, do yourself a favor and get new fillers. New paint will only last a few months and you'll be back to sqaure one.

When you get new ones have them painted and then install them yourself. You should be able to find a very good painter to do them for $225-$275 and they are easy to put on with a good friend to help handling the bumpers.Good luck

Interesting post, my low mileage (29,000 mile) car has haze on the front bumper, the bumper fillers look fine. The haze is easily removed from the front bumper, but then it returns again, this has been happening now for a few years and I haven't noticed any problem except that it occasionally needs to be rubbed.

I just went out and took a picture and the car needs to be cleaned. You can see the filler looks fine, just that the bumper needs the haze removed which I did in one small spot with a couple of rubs of my finger right before taking the picture.

fillers

Hauserc, Where is the best place to get NOS fillers? Do tou have to worry about them doing the same thing because of their age being the same as the ones on the car? Thanks Rick

I am having the new oned done right now. I guess time will tell. I beleive that GM is still making the fillers. As such, the NOS stock fillers may not be as old as you think. Alot of times, the GM box will have the date of production on it. I know I got some GM NOS weatherstripping with the box dated 6/2008. Couldn't be any worse than what I had especially since the front driver side split/cracked. I had no choice but to go through with this expensive replacement of the fillers. As for the quality of the NOS fillers I got, I will know when the bodyshop calls me and tells me everything was fine or the ^%^&(* hit the fan.

It happens to my GN too... I bring it to the detail shop, and they get it off every time... no need for replacement, unless cracked or junk.

They are definitely on their way out...don't waste money repainting...I had the same thing happening on my 41K GN...front fillers kept hazing over...I also thought the fillers were fine...nice and pliable...no cracks...finally took them off a few weeks ago...they looked like crap...and as I was handling them...they starting cracking...can get new fillers from GMPartsDirect...I wouldn't worry about new OEM fillers being old and the same hazing thing happening...besides being in a sealed box they also haven't been exposed to ultraviolet...heat from the sun...etc...
