So our son fell down and landed on his collarbone, which broke at the 75% percentile going towards the shoulder. Apparently this is the weakest spot. He is early teens and I guess it doesn't fully develop until around 20 years old. It is also the most common broken bone for children.
I know some here had to have broken theirs, so my question is; did it heal well? Do you guys have any pain or deformed bones now with older age or is it pretty much 'just as new' when healed?

I broke my shoulder into 8 pcs about 6 years ago. Collar bone was one of them. It only takes 8lbs of pressure to break it. If he didn't tear any of the muscles or ligaments...the doctor will probably say let it heal on it's own. It may be deformed, but really isn't going to hurt anything. They repair stronger then before. Take him to an orthopedic shoulder doctor for this exam. If he tore other tissue, then you could have it screwed and put back normal. Difference is, if the tissue isn't tore, they have to cut it to do this. If it is tore, then fix it all once. You never want to cut muscle or muscle facia unless you have to.
I am a strength coach and bodybuilder and my shoulder doesn't stop me from pressing 300 lbs over my head. I was back to full strength in 6 months and I was 37 when this happen. A youngster like him will never know it ever happen. He will learn to adapt to any range of motion it may alter.

Thanks
Coach.

Mine must have healed perfectly (broken back when I was very early teen) because I can't even feel the spot where it healed back together.

Buddy of mine broke his when we were probably 12 or 13. Healed fine, he was back on the field by the end of soccer season.

Broke my collarbone when I was in the 5th grade...horsin around with a friend...went to the doctor and had xrays taken. put me in a tight sling, no cast, that kept my
arm secure to my body...think it was for about a month. Healed up and never looked back. Had a little pain when it happened, but all was fine after that...like you said pretty common.
good luck...

I broke my collar bone when I was 24 in motor cycle crash . The bike slipped out from under me pullling out of a parking lot . I landed on my shoulder just right and it broke under compression and was a clean break. I have a Knot over the site where it has healed . The knot has slowly gotten smaller as I get older. I'm 33 now . I have no ill effects.

I crashed a motorcycle in 2003 and shattered my clavicle. The xray looked like popcorn in my shoulder.. Dr put a plate with seven screws to hold it together and dug out all the bone fragments. 9 years later I still know it was broke and it limits some movement but all in all it's ok.

Broke mine riding off road bikes when I was 14 or 15 years old.
I don't remember which hurt worse the collar bone or my pride after eating crap in front of my boy's.
Just a little lump after healing, no problems in later years.

Well 2 days later he is doing pretty well with the Motrin. Dr. says it wasn't that bad and should heal up pretty well. Thanks for the replies, I let him read them.

I'm sure it will heal in a few weeks being he's very young. I broke mine in 2009 at 42. mine didnt heal . months later had a plate & screws put in. some days I still feel it. Sux getting old

I have broken both of mine, first time i was 4, riding my big wheel down a huge hill didn't realize you can't turn sharp at high speeds. Second I broke it bouncing off a dash when I was a teenager, good lesson to wear a seatbelt. 3o years since the firsts, 20 sincce the second no problems with either.

I broke mine in College, never saw the doctor and healed itself in a month or so of taking it easy and 30 years later never had a problem with it.

The motorcycle wreck I had that disclocated my shoulder a few years later... that is a pretty constant struggle to keep it from dislocating.

I have seen allot of kids break them. My son races Motocross and has broken both of his. They say that when they heel they are stronger. His doctor also said that it only takes about 7 pounds per inch to break them.
Good luck I hope he heels up quick.

Make sure he sees a good orthopaedic surgeon. When I broke mine they let it heal on its own for 3 days (emailed the X-ray to some doctor at midnight, said it would be fine) and then it was checked by the chief surgeon. He took one look at my shoulder drooping 2" below the other and said it needed to be re-broken and braced - - RIGHT NOW. So they did, screwed in a nasty looking plate for a year and then took it out - - now perfect.

Don't let the doctors be lazy! You guys are paying them good money down there!
