Wideband O2 placement, can I get away with 20" from turbo w/o overheating the sensor?

I am getting ready to install an AEM wideband O2 sensor in my 67 Firebird/LC2 hybrid and I am concerned about sensor placement to keep the sensor from overheating. In the past on GN's I have placed the sensor close to the end of the DP with no sensor overheating problems. My Firebird is pretty tight in that area so I was thinking of putting it where the DP bends to go down which would be right under the heater box on a Buick. The instructions say that on a turbo'ed car the sensor needs to be 36" from the exhaust port and I come up with roughly 31" from the closest port where I would like to put it. Its less than the instructions call for by not by much. Anyone installed one in the similar area and got away with it? I am not opposed to adding a heat sink if that will help. Thanks!

It's hard to say, iirc the bosch sensor does not like temps over 950f. Consider that pre turbo in the stock o2 sensor position many people measure between 1500-1650 degrees. Will it drop 700 degrees in 30 inches or so?

I ran a wideband where the THDP has a bung for an o2 and I believe I overheated it (it started reading funny) so I moved it down to the end of the downpipe. No problems there.

Personally, I would try and mount it down at the end of the dp. All you need is iirc a 18mm nut (double check that) to weld to the pipe (with hole drilled). Use a sparkplug (I think some fords use these big threads) in the nut to keep it from warping while you weld. That's what I did. Works well enough for me. Sorry I couldn't give you a concrete answer on that, just something to consider.

Just put one in about a foot drom the turbo. No issues yet. I was told by a very well known TR enthusiast and mechanic as long as your a foot away or more your fine. He's been running the AEM wideband for years on numerous cars.

I run my O2 in the downpipe under the heater box area. I think it's about 18" away from the turbo. No problems and it's not difficult to get to.
