I pulled my timing cover to fix a leak in the seal. Marked my distributor and put it all back together. The battery seems like it is not holding a charge very well at all. I had to jump the car off. It started fine and idled ok but if I went to put a load on it as in rev it a little or just put it in gear....it fell on its face. Question being: If it started fine the timing should be ok...??? The low battery could cause it to have no power?? Thankyou for your thoughts...!!

if you are killing your voltage i would guess the coil pack and all would die with it and cause the power lose.

Low voltage will cause all kinds of problems. My car won't fire under boost and runs horrible at less than 13.4 volts. It's also a good way to blow a headgasket.

No Facts

From my experience here my car has a solar charger attached to it. I forgot to hook it up and ran the car up and down the driveway (it's long and the car is still a shell for now ) until the weak battery wouldn't hold the 12 volts to power the ECM. If you have a weak battery it can cause problems. These cars as well as most cars today have to have the full voltage to function properly. It not like the cars with a carb that only need the battery for starts and some electrical items.

Thanks Guys a new battery will be there tomorrow. I will let you know if that was it.....and by the way....if it starts ok....then the timing is Ok....right....or can you still be a little off like an aspirated motor..?? this I would like to know for sure.....thanks again for your thoughts......!!!!

Installed a new battery and straightened out a plug wire misroute. The car now idels perfect but when i go to drive it now it wants to surge especially in first and second and when I came back from my round the block warm up it started to backfire every now and then. Can that timing be off just a little and do this...?? I have new plugs and haven't messed with anything else except for pulling the timing cover and removing the crank sensor and marking the distributor for R&R. It all went back together smooth..and how can you F... Up the crank sensor...two bolts one slotted and the other a straight hole. Pushed the top slotted hole over to the left as was before and torqued down. Really am wondering....would the car start up fine and idle smooth but still be a little out of time...?? Causing the surging and backfiring when going into the throttle...?? Ran a code check on ECM ....everything checks good. Car does smell rich but FP only at 32.....

TIMING? DISTRIBUTOR??

matt, this engine doesn't have a distributor.. the item you removed to do the timing cover leak was the cam sensor.. It controls the injectior timing. The crank trigger controls the ign..
If the "timing" you refer to is the cam sensor timing, refer to GNTTYPE and use the procedure there to set it properly.. If you have it off location it could cause the backfiring you mentioned.
The engine will start and run w/ the cam sensor in 180* out of phase, but it will make the engine run rough and can cause the fuel smell you mention.
Also if the crank sensor is hitting the ring on the balancer, that could cause problems..
Fuel pressure is low if that's w/ the vac line off, engine idling.. should be nearer to 40.

Thanks a bunch Chuck....don't know why I keep refering to the cam sensor as a distributor or timing gadget. I will look at the gn ttype method and reset my fuel pressure.
