The only strange thing is that the system won't hold any pressure. I have a pressure test kit and confirmed that the pressure is going somewhere.

You have a problem if it will not hold pressure!! Think about it if you put pressure in a closed system and it goes down then you have a leak.

Just because you are having a problem finding it or two builders missed it Is not a reason to just leave it as is.

Maybe you have a crack in the intake, heads, block, radiator.Avery slow leak that is evaporating etc.But you do have a problem and If not found I see another rebuild in youre near future!!

Fix the problem don't just treat the symptoms!!

Ok now that I have said that Ramchargers fans lowered my temps by 20 degrees.:D

It might have been the intake gasket, dunno. It holds pressure now. Held 16 lbs. for a while. The radiator appears to have a leak (there's a wet spot and scale in one spot) but it's not big enough to cause a pressure drop over about 15 mins.

Took the car out today and those fans made a HUGE difference. The stock fan ran constantly to keep it at 185 or so at idle. Now the fans come on at 180 (must be the chip setting) and it goes down to 170 in about 30 seconds and they shut off.

Now to fix the leak in the A/C so I can see how well the fans do with the A/C on.

I keep replying to my own posts but these fans are really cool. Cruising around today it's 95 degrees out. I put the Extender in "race fan" mode so they run all the time. Except for hill climbing and romping on it, it stayed at 165 degrees. Unbelievable. It seems the temp is more a function of air flow rather than the thermostat. Thermostat has to be wide open all the time when it's this hot out. I guess that'll change when the weather gets cooler?

Dont wanna say I told you so, but.....

PS: You never came by to see mine. Guess you got them in OK tho. Once you look at em, they arent that hard to figger out.

Mines all set and I dont think its seen 170* yet!

At what point does the fan become overpowered by the incoming air. I know the RC fans are like 2300 cfm or around there. With the given dimension of the radiator, at what vehicle speed does this occur?

Wouldn't it be around 25 mph or so?

Dunno, I have a FAST now and cant tell it (or at least I dont know how) to turn the fans off at X mph. But when I ran a chip I turned the fans off at 35mph. Did they turn off? Dunno, never got under the hood at that speed :-P

No, never did make it by. I would've liked to, but it's tough to find time. I still want to bring my brother's car by to see what you think one of these days.

I figured I'd pop the fans in while I had the intake off (and thus all the plumbing taken apart). It wasn't tough to noodle through. Almost looks like it belongs there.

The Extender seems to have the fan come on at 180 and shut off at something lower so it cycles between 180 and what looks like 170 or so. The gauge and the temp sensor are about 5-10 degrees apart at times, especially at lower temps. With the chip in "race fan" mode the fan comes on at 150 so it runs constantly. The fans bring it down to the 160 stat even on a day like today.

I was able to seal the intake up, too. No oil leaks (for now). Now I have to figure out where the tranny fluid is coming from.

Finally relocated the alky tank today. I bought a 2' -4 AN line from Jegs and a coupler.

The elbow for nozzle was already pointing in the wrong direction. I didn't want to mess with it for fear of disturbing the JB Weld seal. So the line loops around and does a 180. No big deal. I like the bottle in this spot better.

I put the charcoal canister down on the frame rail. It basically just sits there, but I wire-tied it in place so it doesn't flop around.

I may have to find a more permanent mounting solution - the wire ties are a little flimsy.

I'm the king of procrastinators. I won't deal with that radiator until the hole gets REALLY big. Thanks for the tip, though. I'll have to keep an eye on ebay for such things.

It's not totally drop-in either, right? I'd need separate trans and oil coolers? Or does it have one cooler in it?

Thanks,
Jim

Hey guys, I am curious about this one. I noticed at night when I am a light my headlights are flashing a little, so is my dashboard. I am wondering if it is the fan?? I know this sucker pulls alot of juice and I dont ahve relays for it yet.

Thanks

I have my Extender chip on "race fan" mode which means the fans run constantly. I don't drive my car at night much but I haven't noticed a problem with the lights on short trips with the headlights on. I'm still using the stock relay for the fans and I have the Hella replacement headlights.

Slight flicker is the regulator doing its job. Large deviations could mean a diode going out

Hey Jim, thanks for the reply. I can see it if I watch closely art a light, my dash lights does it to. I did that test with the batt and lat that you posted a while ago. on the neg side of the bat to alt ground I get .55, pos to pos I get .00.

should I ground the alt? If I should, where do I ground it to? firewall or chassis?

thanks
Ralph

p.s, this is a rebuilt pep boys alt, I dont trust it! on the cover it says 100A, but there computer says it is 120A!

Word of advice when installing your fans, DON'T drill holes in the fan shroud when it's against the radiator. This guy I know (not me) was doing a setup the other night and he drilled a nice hole in his new GM radiator that has less than 200 miles on it. Needless to say he felt like a moron....OK I admit it, it was me. Just a lesson fellas, drinking and auto maintenance are a dangerous combination...and yes I am from Alabama..:D

Back to the original post. Overheating after a rebuild. Was your camshaft degreed in properly? I've seen more than once, a motor running hot w/ the cam either not degreed ( just line up the dots )or not degreed properly. Things need to be verified. Brian

I can only assume it was degreed properly. The guy that did it is really good. I just chalked it up to the .040 overbore. But it was just a weak stock fan. With a Nick Micale radiator and The Fans it's rock solid at 165 under most conditions.
