I need some advice on routing my vacation next week. We are going from Joliet, IL to Iron River, WI.

Mapquest and my Garmin GPS has both have it about 8 hrs going 39 through Rockford, then 90, then 94 through Eau Claire. One of the drivers at my work said the last time he went through Eau Claire that it took forever because of construction and slow traffic. Any heads up on how this route would be?

The previous two years, we stayed north on 39 until it ends and picked up 51 and took that all the way through Minoqua, Hurley, Ashland, etc. It's not a bad drive, but it takes 9+ hours. Traffic gets pretty slow in the touristy towns.

Thanks.

I drive through Wisconsin every year on my way to my Canada fishing trip. No need to worry about Eau Claire. Two or 3 years ago they finished the bypass project. It is awesome. RT 53 used to go right through the town of Eau Claire. So you had highway traffic and local traffic it was terrible. Then when they were building the bypass it was a mess. Now the bypass goes completely around the city.
