I would like to get the speedo to work, but it doesn't look like a simple bolt in. What do I need and how?

That is just a simple frost plug in the speedo on the drivers side, you may have to punch a hole in it to pull it out and pry it with a large screwdriver. You just need to get a th400 speedo gear and holder assembly with mounting clip, and make sure you have the correct ratio. Any tranny shop can get this for you. You will have to order the correct speedo gear ratio, depending on your tire size and gear ratio in the diff. Yo will have to see if there is a gear on your output shaft already if not you wil have to pull the rear tail yoke and install one.

What are the chances the gear will be on the output shaft? Can I pull the tailshaft off instead off screwing with the plug just to see if the gear is on?

Get ahold of CK transmission. They can get you the right speedo gear if you've got your gear and tire size handy.
