A handful of firms is out there, trying to build cars for this new, expensive niche. So far, it appears that Tesla is the closest to actually getting some cars on the road -- the Silicon Valley firm says 40 well-heeled customers have paid $100,000 each for a car, even though they won't get their new toys for at least a year. The buyers appear to be captivated by the fact that these electrics are completely different from relatively stodgy electric vehicles of the past.

Wow, just think of how much money your gonna save on gas

Nice car, wonder if it has AC and heat???

A friend of mine is buiding a 300 volt electric Lamborghini Kit car body/tube frame with two 250 lbft of torque forklift motors.

I'm very curious to see how fast it goes.

You gonna offer a CD for us to modify it?

Do you have anymore info on it?

Not much but he had pictures of it this weekend and it is very impressive. The large area between the seats and the rear wheels of a lamborghini will all be batteries, as the motors take up about 1/2 the space of the lambo transaxle. He is using C4 corvette suspension front and back.

The work I have seen so far will be magazine quality when it is finished: chromoly tube and machined aluminum.

The guy is an electronics genius car guy. His old open road car was a supercharged FI '67 chevelle and he has a woody buick roadmaster with LT1/T56 as his parts hauler.

He built an "unlimited lazyboy" electric go kart/lounge chair that does 25 mph. My project for this winter is to build something that can beat it. It's going to be called "show and go" and will be an electric folding chair complete with cooler and car show supply rack.

When I saw "show and go" I thought it was going to be a toliet bowl or something similar to the one on the old "Home Improvement" show with the "mans" bathroom but a folding chair would be lighter at least.

Battery power is very interesting. There will be lots of new developments in that with the price of gas going up and up. I suppose if you had a solar power charger that you could deploy on the roof you could just keep going on forever, charging while the car was parked while at work.

I think the pictures he had were on his laptop only. I will see if he has posted them on the net, somewhere.

that is really cool. i'm glad to see someone has made a good running electric car that doesn't look like something from a scifi movie.

but they say it is so quick that someone can't reach the radio controlls under acceleration. isn't that story usually told with a $100 bill on the dash?
