From what I understand, 12" converters lose efficiency on the top end when the stall speed is raised. Am I correct? I'm redoing my tranny this spring and I'm going to upgrade converters. I've pooped one 12" and I don't want to do it again. The 9/11s or 9.5 l/u are more efficient right? I haven't decided what I'm going with yet as I'm still looking. Has anyone tried the 9" lockups that I've seen? I know it's a low stall, but I'm looking at 2800 for my next converter (flame suite on). Let's hear it!:)

i say dont matter put a lockup switch on it and lock it down and wont have no loss

but 9/11 is good choice either way ..great converter

a 12 inch or any other diameter for that matter should always furnish a more efficient coupling rate at higher operating speeds .a properly built/modified 12 incher should not have much of an rpm difference between the flywheel/convertor and the input shaft at 2800 rpms when compared to a stocker but will allow a higher mph and greater distance to be covered verses brake specific fuel consumption because of the added energy available to move the car through tuning torque multiplication of a fluid coupling.at lockup this wont matter because there will not be a speed differential between the flywheel and input shaft ,but ther will be between the input and output shafts when operating in reduction or overdrive.www.ckperformance.com need vehicle specifics to reccomend a convertor .please post

Combo

The major mods on my car are pretty much listed in the sig. I do have a dual nozzle SMC kit too, plus some minor things like Jay Jackson TB, Hemco... My 44 never was a super quick spooler like some people's 44 or 49s. I may also switch to a bigger exhaust housing at some point for a little more top end. I was thinking that a true 2800 stall converter would be good for my car. Again, I'm leaning towards an upgrade from a 12" such as a 9/11 or vigilante single disc. It's worth the money for me if I can pick up a tenth or 2. I'm trying to squeeze out as much HP as possible from my combo (less mass = more RWHP, right?) I know I don't need I front mount IC to run low twelves, but I have one anyway and it may make it a little easier.

Best ET: 12.3 @ 111 on pump gas, alky , and 235 DR's
60' in the high 1.8s if I remember correctly

3K stall 0 pump single disk Vigilante will work fine with your turbo.

Thought I told ya that? ;)

Email Bruce and get his thoughts on a 9-11 too. See what stalls are available.

Hurry up drag day is coming up soon.

I hate to say it Al, but not looking so goos for the track. I don't think we'll have enough time to get the car ready. I may have to give up my spot. I'd still like to go even if I can't take the T. :(

12 inch convertor

9.5 Vigilante (3000) stall yesterday 0 boost launch 1.61 sixty, 2 lb. launch 1.55, lost about 2 mph. on the top end compared to a red stripe 2600 but et overall much better. these sixty foots were on et streets

Come on Ben, I haven't even got a ship date yet for my Ramchargers parts and I'm going.

Got 2 turbo swaps and tons of maintenance and tuning to do.

Your car is almost ready now. :)

You can finish it.

Hmm.. I certainly don't want to lose any MPH. Whay do you think that happened with the Vigilante? Al, my car doesn't move itself anymore. I don't have it in my possesion either.

you will ALWAYS lose mph when your et gets quicker, unless the et improvement was due to a HP increase...in this case, the et improvement was due to a better 60' because of the converter, not more hp, just better utilization......

a properly matched converter will improve your 1/4 mile times a bunch

(why do you lose mph? because you are on the track a shorter period of time and build less top speed thru the traps......)

That makes sense now. I thought it was because of inefficiency. I guess I never thought it through. Thanks AZGN. Would you see a RWHP increase because of less rotating mass?

oh maybe, but I doubt it...my Precision 5 disk is heavy as hell....what you DO get is more torque multiplication and that definitely helps you accelerate faster.......

I'll say it agin, even with a turbo like a TE-44, a good converter will help your 1/4 mile times more than anything else....that said, you gotta also have traction, and the ability to hold boost at the line

Ben is usually pretty good at that stuff even if he has to rebuild his brakes at the track rental. :D

You can get her back and running by then.

If you want to have guaranteed lockup at WOT and longevity I guess you will need the 5 disk Vigilante.

I may lock up my single once or twice race day myself. ;)

Email Bruce the 9-11 may have more clutch material in a single disk and be okay for the 3-4 times a year you race and be more cost effective.

Al, Ben.............Get those cars ready!!! I might be running with my old TC as the $$$$ just isn't there!! Still going though. Looks like some mid-low 12's again.........
