Is 15W50 Mobile 1 too heavy for summer weather?
I thought that with the extra heat build up that it would be better.
If it is what weight is recomended?

I second that! The only reason to use the 15/50 is if your motor has seen better days, or if your in the die-hard 500. Nothing wrong with 5/30 either, just because it's thinner doesn't mean it doesn't protect! If you use synthetic oil you don't even need the oil cooler! Hot oil/cold intake charge=HP!;)

Heard once that 5w-30 doesnt have the same anti-scuff additives that 10w-30 does, so I stick with 10w-30.

I use 15W-50 synthetic now. I like having lots of oil pressure at idle -- about 20psi.

In my opinion, it would seem to be the same arguement at running high octane fuel. 116 is better than 110 which is better than 94 which is better than 87. If you plan to turn up your boost and want to prevent detonation, run more octane. If you want to run your TR hard (ie non-stock power levels) and not worry about metal parts of the engine coming into contact, run thicker oil.:) It is cheap insurance for less-than-ideal oil pressure resulting from wear, improper bearing clearances, or oil pump clearances.

My two cents.

what are some disadvantages to running 15w50 in the summer?
p.s. I have just recently purchased a car, and have no idea what kind of oil the dude put in it, am i safe to assume that he was using mobile1 Synthetic? He had a (PL) euro sticker on the back window which had "mobile 1" as part of it....hmmm P.s.s please don't all kick my ass at once, i am used to changing oil in an aerostar minivan. Where do you add the oil in the buick? in the valve covers?

I've been running Mobil 15-50 oil, summer and winter for over 3&1/2 years now.No problems and the car has seen it's share of "use".The oil goes in the tube on the driver's valve cover, but I suspect you probably figured that out by now.:)

thanks alot man, yeah i've got a kn breather there now, and the guy before me put some kinda chrome/foam edlebrock brether on the pass side, figured it was one of the two:) I was about to take it to the local valvoline, but at 50 bucks?! i said no way, are there any online how-tos for changing the other fluids? im new to all this.

This is actually off of Valvoline's site in regards to different viscosities:

Low-viscosity oils flow better than high-viscosity ones—the lighter-weight fluid is easier to pump and therefore circulates faster through the engine's various galleries. Low-viscosity oils also maintain a lower oil pressure, but the oil pump delivers a greater volume through the galleries than it would with thicker (higher-viscosity) oils. Heavier oils also tend to operate at higher temperatures because the oil pump has to work harder to force the lubricant through the system. Oil does not compress readily, so the added pressure increases the temperature. In the end, high-viscosity oils maintain a higher oil pressure, but the pump delivers a smaller volume of oil.
