Chain broke.

New timing cover and new timing chain.

You may have some bent pushrods.... may have some bent valves.

I would turn engine over by hand and look at the rockers opening and closing with valve covers off. bent valve wont come all the way up. bent pushrod wont open valve as much.

Good luck.

Razor do you think the block and crank are still good? just trying to gauge what im up against... funny thing is I was about to order the alchy kit from you right before this happened...

The chains on the motors are junk from the factory.

You can pull the front cover without pulling the motor. Thats where you start. That cover is made out of pot metal and is really soft. Going high rpms and racing the motor killed the chain.. I mean its only 26 years old. Its a common failure. Like rear main seal.

Been there done that.

so heres the deal... ive come across a brand new crate engine that I can obtain for $2500.00 in my case the turn around would be a lot quicker than pulling disassembling and sending out for repairs and may even be more cost affective. i havent seen the long block yet but wll be seeing it this weekend
to see if it is what they say it is.

your thoughts??

You broke the timing cover it unbolts.... Not the block from what i can see in that pic...

Never said anything about pulling motor
May be a simple timing chain and cover replacement... and your going off the deep end thinking new engine

Sure is a lot less work to replace a chain and cover than pulling the motor

Your right going off the deep end in thinking new motor, I tend to want to plan worst case scenario. I have down time as a factor as its a daily driver.. ill pull out the cover and check the oil pan for metal. Guess ill just order the chain and gears with a new cover now.

What's the best set to go with?

Let's say my budget is between 2500 and $3k. Any suggestion supposing the bottom end is sound? Reason I'm s little spectacle on the bottom end is I had a dry start issue and could hear the bottom when crankimg the car, I had used the wrong oil when I had first bought the car 10/40 synthetic. Since then I went to 20/50 synthetic reef line and last oil change I used sms oil 20/50.
Is like to kick $600 out of the budget towards that alchy kit...

Correction *red line, ams oil. Damn auto correct on these smart phones.

Btw the phone app for android rocks!!

You need to spend a few hours and tear it apart. If you dont have the time, get the car to Jeff at Trackside or Freddy at Turbotech. Both know the GN motors really well and are reasonably close to you. Freddy is in Ftlauderdale and Jeff is in Pompano. Nothing a trailer cant handle quickly.

Pull the pan, timing cover, and see where your at. Look for metal not timing chain related in the pan and go from there. Trashed bearing should be easy to spot. The Buick is a relatively easy motor to work on. If there is copper in the pan, bearings are trashed then the other motor is the option.

If there is metal in the pan.. the turbo soon will be next.

First thing if do is take the rockers off and put compressed air in the cylinders to check for bent valves. If that's gtg then you can pull ths timing cover in the car. If the valves are bent just pull the engine. It probably didn't hurt the short block though. New set of heads and timing chain. You need to pull the pan regardless if the chain/gear failed

Pulling the timing cover and oil pan in a few to inspect. Seems like that long block isn't going to pan out. I did notice that the crank pulley has moved forward a tad and is pressing against the pulley directly above it.

So we pulled the oil pan and found this...

Yes. Looks like a bearing. Take it to a shop or pull the motor.

Looks like pieces of the stock aluminum cam gear. Cleaning all that chit out of there without tear down is probably futile. You need to check the mains for debris embedded in the bearings and if ok then you might have a shot at spraying it out with solvent and a new timing chain set.

the crank snapped. buying a a bare block and stock crank tomorrow, So far on the list: ordering JE pistons and rings, comp cam hydraulic 206 w/lifters, comp cam double roller timing chain set, adj roller cam button, TA cam bearings, gn1 5970 perf rods, still compiling the list. Im going to have it done at the shop I work at on my days off with help from a couple of the techs. I cant afford to pay for the labor involved to do the job. if any one has any suggestions on other parts let me know. Ill be using the machine shop we use here for the vw and audi's.

And forgot to mention the little guy will be helping aswell. He loves the car and doesn't want to ride in anything else. Guess at 3 1/2 years old he'll be the youngest working on one of these :-)
