This morning i was on my way to work on the highway and take this 35MPH curve at 55 or more and pull up on this newer Saab convertible. We were in the right lane.
I thought nothing of the car, looked stock except for the dual exhaust.
I check my left blind spot and i hear him get after it, DAMN it took off and he went from 35 to 60 in just a few short seconds!

I couldnt believe what i saw, so i nail it in my 87 LIMITED and proceed to catch the guy, yet he let off right at 60 so i got right behind him and i decide to now check my right blind spot when he NAILS IT AGAIN?!?!?!

So now i look forward and he is 3 car lengths ahead,
this car sounds loud and mean from a roll, i floor it at 16psi and im not gaining on him:confused:
i reach for the boost command and turn the dial to 21 and lock the convertor, it took me to 120 to catch the guy:confused:

He let off right as soon as i was rolling by him and he looks over and smiled. His windows were tinted, i couldnt see him very clearly.
I quickly slowed down and got in front of him and he rolls by me on my right, i look over and wave and to my dismay, he was at least 55-65 years old and was just racing me on the highway in a 55MPH zone?!!?!?!?!?
Im almost ashamed to say, if i didnt have the alky, i would have surely lost to a Saab convertible.

What the heck? my car runs pretty good from a roll, wonder what he had done to it?
I am going to do some searching, but it was new, like a 2002-2005, 2 door convertible and i thought it said A3 on the far right of the decklid? it definitely had dual exhaust, i got a good look at that for awhile, till i turned the boost up. His car was pretty loud, it almost sounded like a turbo porsche getting after it.

I think they have a 2.0 turbo motor in them, anyone know of a website for them or know the specs for them?

almost ashamed

That Saab had to have the boost turned up. The dealer I work for also has a Saab franchise. Ive driven that exact car. My mild built 87 T would have destroyed it. I do know that if you turn the boost up on those Saabs they will run with the best of them.

Well, sort of.

I was looking back at my blind spot and checking if i could cut infront of this pickup when i HEARD his dual exhaust, by the time i looked forward this SAAB was at least 3 cars and gaining.
THIS CAR WAS LOUD! My windows were up and the radio was on.

The car has DUAL tips, one on the drivers side, one on the passenger side, ive yet to find a regular saab on the net with that rear facia. Definitely not stock exhaust, but the rear bumper was cut out just like the drivers side and looked "normal"

By the time i passed him, i caught him rather quickly once the boost was around 20psi and reeled him in. Ive raced alot at the track and reeled plenty there, so i "assume" i had about 10MPH over him once i was passing him....
i checked my scanmaster and lowest 02 was 814 at 115. My car has 275-60-15 tires and my speedo is off 7% due to the taller tires.

I just cant believe how quickly it blasted from 60-100!

Welby- it was a Saab just like that, but the rear is different-
it was a little bit older 2002? and had BBS rims on it, we slowed down to a 45 MPH zone and i was blinking to check the reeeumms out.

I know it did not say 9-3, but maybe AERO.... i dont know, but i did get a good look at the rear when i was catching up.

The car was fast, my car went 109 MPH last time to the track with a ATR low timing chip, less boost, and 880 on the 02....i took the 7th injector off to get my 02s back in check.
I would guess that my car now runs 112 like it used to with the stock turbo, perhaps faster now with the alky....

I know it had to have the boost turned up, but i did some searching.
40 HP with the ECM reflash, and they do sell bigger turbos and downpipes for these cars.
Sure hope i run into him again, i was astonished twice how quick it really was....
The only reason i posted about "almost" loosing to a Saab is i couldnt believe how quick it was and really didnt expect it to haul ass!
Guess i need to stop filling up with 87 octane:o

Chuck-
Hey buddy, man i know it was a Saab with duals.

I got it, must have been early, but here is one on ebay that looks just like it, but the one i raced, had the viggen sign on the decklid instead of the 9 , then the number 3???

Hence why i thought it may have said A3, but thats an audi.

Maybe someone placed the triangle on the decklid for some odd reason, but his triangle was grey or silver?
Here is the car..

ebay item 4534907460

and the rear pic.

Now, imagine the rear of this Saab with Duals, one on the pass, one on the drivers side and the tips were thinner kind of like a 93 Z28 camaro and stainless, this looked factory with the duals.

230 HP plus exhaust mods, then maybe who knows what else....

the car was fast and i was impressed, i wouldnt have caught him in my white limited:o

LOL, i was keeping an eye out for him on the way to work this morning:D no avail:rolleyes:

Bryan, who was more surprised? The dude in the Saab or you in an old Regal?

Saab folk, just like Volvo folk are sensible people and don't tend to mod their cars like we do.:p Maybe you found the one quirky dude that hopped-up a "Scwhedish" car.:D

I read Sabbnet alot since my wife drives a '96 9000CS light pressure turbo 2.3 . They worry about brakes, exhaust, wheels and ECM flashes mostly. Alot of the cars have fuel cutoffs above factory boost. It's hard to find real performace guys over there.

well, all i have to say is that the car was quick and i wish i had his opinion on what kind of monte passed him on the highway:p

I know it wasnt stock because of the twin tips and how loud it was.

Sure hope everone doesnt think i drive a slow car everyday:D

Will take my car to the track in 2 weeks, today is my sisters birthday and we are celebrating it this sunday, which by the way is track day.

John L.- Most of the threads i read were about ecm reflash and the 37HP. Imagine the HP increase if we had one of those cars and had full control of the ecu.

Buddy of mine had a 2.3 turbo mustang. 11.08 125 with a 75 shot and hooked better than most. I am not ashamed of having a bigger displacement engine and going just as slow...

saab

2001 viggen is my daily driver, nordic package or similar aftermarket ecu, exhaust upgrade will bring up to 300 hp.
cars are dogs off the line but on the highway it can hang, pulls up to 145 or so.. i've definitely surprised a few ls-1, 5.0 drivers...

Who makes a aftermarket ECU for those cars?

If you were to guess, how much do those cars weigh?
BW

viggen

weight 3100-3200
ecu remapped by abbott racing, nordic tuning, maptun, or nick tailliferro (sp?).

I dunno about the 37HP thing. I won't touch the car other than maintenance. I need her car to run daily. :D However they have aluminum heads and this one seeps oil. Imagine turning up the wick on that.
