Folks,
You guys were rec'd to me as THE authority on 2004R's. I have a 67 Camaro BBC that I want to attach a 2004R to.
Locally there is a guy selling one supposedly from a 86 GN. It's not in a car, he says it runs great but he doesn't know the mileage...

1. How do I ID the transmission?
2. Will all 2004R's bolt up to BBC pattern?
3. What's it worth?
4. Can i run it till I break it and then rebuild or should I send it out for rebuild first?
5. Any other ideas/option/opinions

Thanks,
Scott

1: If he is being honest, the trans will have a tag on the tailshaft that has a "BR" at the begining, second, take the pan off to make sure the inside is clean and look at the sides of the valve body to make sure it is stamped with a pinkish colored ink that also says "BR" on it. You will also see two pressure switches on the valve body. If not, write down that code and we can tell you what is in it. The value of a GN core is in the valve body and the governor.

2: If it is an 86 trans and a true GN unit, it will be both a Chev and BOP pattern.

3: They retail for around $450 to $600 if it is a true "BR" unit.

4: The sound way would be have it built to manage the power your engine is putting out. Anything less would be a roll of the dice.

5: Other than those items I would say do it, your engine will love the break it gets when you are cruising on the freeways. Also, make sure you get a new converter to lessen the chances of contaminating a fresh rebuild.

regardless of calibration it will need tweaking.if you are interested we have a 200 page manual on the trans that covers just about everything including step by step rebuild with photos, trans id,updates, theory ,tech principles of operation etc..as long as it is a universal case with dual bolt flange itll fit your bbc.there are a few buick olds pontiac caddilac only cases so make sure its not one of those.they are 1 in 100.search this forum form the manual as well as tons of 2004r information.you were sent to the right place.

Thanks for the help!
I'm going over this weekend to look at it. After I asked for the codes, he told me it was a BQ. I think that makes it an 84-85 GN. Is this still a good core and anything else I need to look at?
I asked him if it shifted well, and he said it is "shifting early". From what I have read, this could be a misadjusted TV cable, which could also be damaging...any thoughts/advice?
Thanks again,
Scott
