The no. of teeth only affect the speedo.
The colors might not tell the whole story.

Exactly. There are two sets of teeth on the governor gear. The small diameter gear meshes with the outputshaft and is the exact same on all the gears regardless of part number. The large diameter part of the gear is the only part that varies from one part # to the next. The large diameter part of the gear meshes with the gear at the end of the speedo, and when people refer to the number of drive teeth, this is the part of the gear to which they are referring.

The number of drive teeth (big part of gov gear) in relation to the driven teeth (speedo gear) , along with rear tire diameter, must be correct to ensure an accurate reading on your speedometer.

If you go to TCI's site HERE , you can determine what speedo gear you require to work with your current 13 tooth (Part# 8634934) drive gear and your current tire to ensure your speedo is accurate. At the same page at TCI they have a convienient calculator to determine your tire diameter too, as long as you know the size.

Thanks, I appreciate the information.

What they apparently did was to replace the the green 10 tooth gear with the white 13 tooth gear. I will never be able to calibrate my speedo with that gear. I would need a 37 or 38 tooth gear with the 13 tooth drive gear. they do not even make any over 31 teeth.

They didn't even tell me.

37/13=2.846
38/13=2.923

2.846x10=28.46
2.923x10=29.23

If your guesstimates are accurate, then
a 10T drive gear and a 28T or 29T driven
gear should get you close.
I sent a GM speedo gear chart to your
e-mail address below your post.

Thanks, I appreciate that. The point is the shop put in the wrong gear and didn't even tell me. It was not the same gear they took out. They took out a 10 tooth and put in a 13. With the 10 I could get it close. Now I have to remove the pan and put in another gear after I just paid them $85 to do it.

I am moving this week and next. the speedometer is indicating way high. Will it damage the speedometer mechanism by turning past 120 MPH, the max indicated speed on the speedo?
