the tranny in my 85 t type is shot so i dropped it out today and its got writing on it and the converter saying its from an 87 caprice. how different is this transmission and should i rebuild it or find one from a tr to build?

caprice tranny

as far as I know the tranny in the caprice was a 700 4r . I had a caprice and so do a few of my friends and they are all 7004r , Better check the casing numbers before moving on. The 700 is basically a turbo 350 with a overdrive but in stock form not as strong and well suited as the 2004r brf that came in the gn. I'm not a tranny expert but know there is a length difference in the two think the yoke is also different. maby someone else can shed some better light on the subject, hope this helps abit...

A Caprice with the Olds 307 uses the 200-4R. The SBC uses the 700.

As far as converting it I would search for all of Chris's threads on the subject.

700 and 200 are easy to tell apart. a 200 4r has no removable tailhousing, dual bellhousing bolt patern, and an oval track looking oil pan with 2 sumps. a 700 r4 has a removable tailhousing with about 3 possibly 4 tailhousing available, a chevy only bolt patern execpt for a hand full that had b.o.p. bolt patern but those very hard to find, and 16 bolt square oil pan. but they both use the same yokes which is the same as the th350 and PG. i want to say the 700 is about 7 inches longer than the 200. other than GN the 200 4r is GM forgoten tranny it was just about everything with a 305 ,307, or other base v8s
