Why I want to know is, why in the HELL did they lessen the new replacement for the OBVIOUSLY BEST SELLING engine in the country, by two tenths of a litre. Now people are going to be like "Oh... what's THIS crap..." You mean to tell me they couldn't make the stroke a TOUCH longer? How about just makin the bore just a tad bigger? It could have been a completely redesigned engine, but ya had to change the displacement too? The decision makers up there are shooting themselves in the foot, every day.
50% of what made buicks actually sell, is the 3800 engine. EVERYONE I know loves it. Sooooo you change it? GREAT. Now it's a totally new engine, that people are probably either not going to trust, or just stay away from completely. Like myself.
Look... lets face it. 1999 park avenues, or 2000 lesabres weren't making buick big bucks. The cars are nothing short of TURDS. They look like crap, handle like crap, and are just that; crap.
The ONLY thing that makes money, is impulse purchases. Ie. younger cars, for younger crowds. Old people buy park avenues, throw them in the garage, and use them once a month till they die. So... 4500 miles. Then they either get passed on to a relative, or sold to a friend for pennies on the dollar. They rarely get into accidents. (racing, drunk driving, or just driving too fast) They never break down (cuz they never drive them) and they go to waste. That will BURY buick. You need a constant turnover of product. Ie. CAMAROS. The yahoos buy them, and drive them like they stole em. Mod em, throw a few beers back, and crash em. It's been the life cycle of the sbc since the first 10 seconds of it's life. Or any other fast car for that matter. They keep selling, and they will KEEP on selling, till this planet blows up.
So yea, the other 50% of what helped buick stay afloat, in my mind, was the regal badge. It was their 'sportiest' car in their lineup. Always has been. Noone wants a park avenue!!! THEY WANT REGALS! I got offers on all my 3 regals every single day. Without fail. 1 of them was even the 4 door variety lol.
So let's recap. 50% of buick was the 3800 engine. The other half was the regal lineup. Sooo they ditch the regal, then they ditch the 3800.... Hmmmmm. OK. SURE, I'll buy a 20,000 dollar boat with some new fangled 3.6, that gets 17 miles to the gallon... YEA.
So now they bring the nameplate back out. (the reason is TOTALLY OBVIOUS. it's their only saving grace) and they throw a 2 or 2.4 litre in it? The ONLY thing that would save their asses, is this new regal, with an automatic trans, and the new "greener" 3.6 made into a 3.8. Make the turbo, and manual an option.
Look. Old people will NOT buy a manual, and the younger, sport crowd will NOT drive a lawnmower engine powered 4 door.... I'm just absolutely lost... This car is the worst of both worlds....
When hoping to garner some of the evo/g8/sti/cobaltss/camaro/mustang/mazda3 people, I would have hoped they would have done something a little better. Even the concept Regal GS... 3900 pounds with a 2 litre in it. A cobalt ss would whoop that car something fierce. And they look good too. (not that the gs doesn't)
I'm very pissed off, and I don't think I'm ever going to get what I want in a daily driver lol. I want that GS with an n/a 3800, and an automatic transmission, with REAL all wheel drive. Now THAT would be a great car, that I could do **** with. Drive all year in the snow, get decent gas mileage with, cart some people around in, and maybe mod in the future. What are you gonna do with a 2 litre manual... Mow the lawn? Have fun in traffic with that gear shift.

Sorry for the rant... I love buick, and I hate seeing these fools make these obviously bad decisions. Especially with the money they make...

When Buick released the Regal with a Turbo 3.8litre engine in 1978, it wasn't the fastest thing on the block. Over the years Buick refined the car and add more power and overall performance.

Give Buick some time, wait for the flop before you place your bets.

Why would we want to wait?. That jelly bean lookin lump would never be found in my driveway. I don't care how fast it is, how great it handles or if it give a h/nd job while I'm drivin'. It just doesn't look cool to me.

Get back to a G8 with a trishield and I'll be down to the dealer to check it out. I'd like mine with LS7 power please. Are you listening Buick. I sent the email and got the generic response.
 
thats funny. I thought Buick was gonna appeal to the Chinese market as it seems thats where the majority of them are being sent, OR built....cant remember what it was, but it was that China Market had rebadged somethings as Buicks.....
ah well. you wont see me own anything newer than 1996, EXCEPT maybe the supercharged Regal or a Camaro.
 
isnt the supercharged GS a regal? ;) I did say except maybe that....course, i havent found one with under 150K miles for under 2K......that didnt need more work
 
The G8 or something like it will be back as a Chevy not a Buick.
 
The turbo Tarus is more comparable to the top LaCrosse. I wanted A LaCrosse but they are just too much for my budget.
 
The turbo 4 model comes to the US. The turbo V6 model stays in Europe. :mad:

They're not too badly priced in their class actually. A heavilly optioned CXS still only tops out at about 35K - 38K

Almost exactly the same as what a similarly equipped Taurus would run (limited, not SHO).

Oh you get alot for the money. They were just not in my budget.:redface:
 
That's not what I meant. The turbo yea, but there IS no coupe for the U.S. It's 4 door, and that's it. And that turbo? It's stupid. Ok, so you get get 30 more HP added onto a what, LAWNMOWER engine? CIVICS will be smoking this car crazy. They have a 4 cylinder, but less a thousand pounds of weight.... UGH.... Now were going to be no better than all those fools driving 'souped up' civics. "YEA, LOOK AT ME, MY CAR HAS 170 HORSE POWER!!! YEA!!!" All the while everyones staring at the stupid high school kid who thinks he's really got somethin.....
 
I like it. Sharp looken daily driver. If ur looken for something fast then buy a vette. Looks similar to the Lacrosse.
 
I like the concept shown on GM INF.
The white Regal concept shown in Detroit isn't bad either. But the auto show in Portland, OR. didn't get it so I'll console myself with photos.

I don't understand all the heat about what Buick does or doesn't do. The folks in charge obviously have their reasons but unfortunately, we're not privy to them. Maybe the type of cars some of the people on this forum want Buick to build will have a Chevy badge on them. If you don't like what a manufacturer is building, don't buy it. By the way, do any of the unhappy Buick fans own stock in GM? :)

After all, these are just cars we're talking about - not unemployment, overpopulation, etc. :wink:

Every so often, the stars and planets align and we get something like the '84-'87 Turbo Regals. It might happen again soon. (getting 304 horses out of 3.6L V6 is a good start)

Whatever the case, the impression I got after sitting in a bunch of cars at the auto show is this; After a while, they all start to look and feel the same. It makes me wonder about the wildly varying pricetags.

GM is beginning to make some very nice vehicles but I had sticker shock on most of the trucks at the show. $58K for a Chevy Tahoe LTZ?! And it isn't a Hybrid!

I was surprised to see the new Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon though. The one I saw had the 3.6L but I can't recall if it was the 'Performance' or the 'Premium' version and if it had RWD/AWD but it stickered for about $53K. My 81 year-old father said he'd buy it if he had the money.

In any case, it struck me as a better value than the Chevy Tahoe which cost more. (if off-roading isn't your thing that is - I use my '02 Silverado HD for that...)

Even if GM built my ideal car, chances are I couldn't afford the new car smell. Better to wait a year or two and buy used. :cool:
