Sure $60+ K for a new Shelby is expensive, But your 25 year old GN would be over $40K in todays dollars and you'd be lucky to run 14's with a completely stock car. They're running mid 11's in the heat! Even haters have to admit, this was fairly simple to run into the 9's at over 140 MPH. Stock supercharger, unopened motor, and common sense.!

but how much would it cost to get that exact car from them? i'd wager that the cost of the car almost doubles... $120k would hopefully get any car into the 9's..

My 87 GN would be $36,015 in todays dollars when purchased new (if the calculator I am using is correct ), and it did run 14's completely stock. Difficult to compare the 2 cars IMO. I am NOT a Mustang guy but the car is the total package and is amazing for the $$$$.

and then how much more do you have to spend to make sure you don't get kicked out of every drag strip in the country? i can't remember what all you need to have in the NHRA to go that fast, but it's not a short list..
lots of power is fine, but what's the point if you can't use it?

Most guys make a quick 1/8th mile pass to give them an idea what the quarter will be, and a second shot out the back door before politely being asked to leave.... that's what I was shooting for, not class racing, but knowledge to take back to the street. (although I did have a roll bar, 5 point harness, and tranny blanket...just in case!

I used to do 0-60 sprints with a Vericom. I knew how fast the car ran when it did 2.1 seconds 0 to 60 on the unit. It was more interesting to me to go fast against the clock than against someone in the next lane....also you didn't get busted for DRAG RACING and lose your car over it! A speeding ticket maybe, or if lucky, the cop was a car buff also and you got to show off what you did.

Any strict NHRA track will boot you for making a quick/fast eighth pass. The safety equipment and comp license required will set the racer back at least $5k to run 9's somewhat within the rules if he did all the work himself except the roll cage.

Most Mustang owners would end up doing donuts in the middle of the dragstrip and then hit both guardrails before coming to a stop. We used to go to private track rentals with the Viper guys and they're just as bad. Almost every time one would go out of there heavily damaged on a flatbed.

Forgot about the Viper guys, Vette guys are almost as bad. Alot of 14 sec Z06's and SRT10 Vipers at my local track.

25 years ago I took two spare cars and parts and made a really, really nice 70 Skylark into a red light to red light street car. mid 4 series gears in a Ford 9" with 10" sticky tires, mild 455 with headers (nothing special) with 2 1/2" exhaust and trick turbo 400. High 12's in the 1/4 but high 6/low 7 second 1/8's (hit the redline short of the timing lights). Awful noisy at 70 mph. On the street it was deadly from a dig. On a roll on with an early 90's ZR corvette we went door to door but from a dig I destroyed him. That car was the most fun car I think I've ever owned, sold it to buy my first T. Had $1000.00 in it. I would not want to drive it more than 100 miles though.

your car was built with on purpose in mind- to be fast in a straight line for 1320 feet from a standing start..

these new super cars are made to do everything- go, turn, stop- and do it with the driver in noise free air conditioned comfort while getting 20+ mpg... once you start making 700hp or more with them, you have to decide what you want it to do, because it's not going to be able to do everything. if you keep the 19" wheels on it, you'll never get traction off the line. if you swap on some taller slicks in the back and skinnies up front with shocks to plant the tires off the line, then it won't turn or stop worth a crap. and if you do get it to where you can harness the power to the ground, then you need to start adding things like roll cages, safety harnesses, parachutes, fire suppression systems, blow proof bellhousings, and all sorts of other goodies that take the day to day usefulness out of them.

there is an article in the new Hot Rod that i just picked up today where they compare the new ZL1 Camaro and Shelby GT500 in the real world. side by side at the same time. pick it up- or just read it at the news stand.. it's an interesting read..
