Hello,

I'm looking for some help with the 2004R in my 88 MC SS.

Background: It's an 87 SS trans. that I had built by a local (St. Louis, MO) shop. Told them It would have 350hp in front of it and I wanted good quality shifts. This was back in 2003, they installed a billet servo and hardend stator, saying that was about "all you could do".

YES, I know now that should have been a red flag!

I paid for their bench rebuild along with a reman converter (it feels like a stock D5) and installed the trans. myself. Had issues with WOT downshifts into second, it would slip and feel like neutral. Took the entire car back, they replaced the burned 2nd gear band. Didn't even make it home and 2nd gear was gone again. Back to the shop, they fixed it again but still downshifting into 2nd is weak at best, let off the throttle and it chirps the tires hitting 3rd. I've been driving the car as-is ever since.

Also, when fully warmed up, it is slow to engage reverse. When this happens I leave it in neutral for a few seconds, then back to reverse and it works.

The car is fine at part throttle, has been a few thousand miles including two Hot Rod Power Tours, but I'm scared to go WOT below 60mph in fear of burning up 2nd gear again.

My budget is very limited and if the trans. goes down again the car will sit for over a year. Will a quality shift kit (CK, PTS, etc.) fix these issues or am I looking at a full rebuild again?

Thanks to all who read this, please by kind to the chevy guy on the buick board!

Brian

these problems can be related to the valve body not being properly torqued down, worn check ball pockets in the seperator plates for the low reverse splitter circuits as well as low pressure. Our kit has everything to correct these problems if they are present. Also you need a good kit anyway if the trans must be reworked again. We also furnish 25 pages of tech and instructions with the kit so you can do it at home with confidence.

Thanks Chris,

I've installed a few B&M kits in the past so a kit with quality instructions doesn't scare me. May contact you soon about some parts.
