can i run a 3.5 inch thdp with a te44 and stock headers on my 87 gn? if so, what will i have to "mod" with a hammer to get it to work. also would poly motor mounts help me alittle so it wont hit? last off, wheres the cheapest place to order a 3 or 3.5 inch terry houston down pipe???

guss 3.5 inch down pipes arnt to popular, i read in a gmhtp mag that one gave jane armstrongs tr about 20 more hp over the 3 inch dp. i would have figured that more people would have been jumping on that band wagon.

The only prob I see is that with the poly mounts, they tend to set the motor a little higher in the engine bay, the dp might hit the bottom of your heater box. About a year ago, when I still had a heater box, I loosened up the exhaust housing on the turbo and moved it around until I had equal distance between the a-arm and heater box with the 3.5" dp. I wound up with about a 1/4" clearance. This was allright with the a-arm, but on a long drive, the dp got hot enough that it actually started to melt the box. I eliminated that prob by sh!t canin' the box. They are a tight fit, but they will work. I put a jack under the dp at the pass. door and put pressure on it untill I got it where I wanted it, then tightened the bolts up on the dp. I got mine from Terry, but I was told that Red was carring them until Terry got back in the mix. Good Luck....Dwayne

Cause that turbo has a Q-trim wheel and that motor is makin a ton more power than yours. 3 1/2" pipe is way overkill on small turbos.

Russ is right just get a 3" TH DP and be done with it.......

I Agree!!!

whos to say that ill stick with the te44 foreaver? i like over kill, if i ever wana go bigger (and i will) itll save me from buying the part all over again. i just wana know physically if it will fit with the te44 stock headers and 2.5 inch hooker cat back (i always have it dissconnected any way but i do need to get it inspected once a year) also would there be any performance dissavantages with that pipe and the small turbo? i dont think there are i just wanted to make sure.

thx for your help

Yes it will work. If a 3 in DP bolts on a 3.5 will too. Things like clearance around the AC box ect... will be tighter obviously. That can always change from car to car. Motor mounts, body mounts ect....will have an effect on fit. You may have to do some work, but for the most part it should bolt right in. The 3.5 i have for sale had to have some minor adjustment made , but over all fit very very good.

I cannot advise about performance gain, but i honestly cant think it will hurt any. Buying once is always a good philosophy.:)

what kind of condition is the one you have for sale and how much would you like for it? also, what kinda mods did you have to make to it and do you have any pictures. thanks again for all your help

Cheapest NEW I have seen was fullthrottlespeed.

Exhaust overkill is the one area that its the least detrimental. Supras run 4 inchers on turbos ranging from our 66mms up to 88mms because it will fit, unlike the GN where you would have to mod the crap out of the car for a 4" DP to fit. Fitting is the deterant on the big downpipes, not the flow size.

I am buying a 3.5 from full throttle very soon. Can only help, especially when the PT67 goes on.;)

but on a long drive, the dp got hot enough that it actually started to melt the box.

could i wrap the dp in that area with some kinda header wrap to eleminate that problem?

When you orser a 3.5" pipe you must specify if it will be used with a P or Q trim turbine wheel. A q trim unit will not seal up on a p trim housing.

Hey Mike; I you ever consider making a 3.5 DP for people who have ATR headers? I would believe there's a market for that.
