I aquired a 3.8 through eBay, going to pick up in my car (not the Buick). My question is what are the dimensions and approx weight of the shortblock (block, crank, front cover, pistons, rods and cam)?
weight I would put you around 120lbs at best, and dimensions are about 24"L, 18"W, 16" H... those are just rough guesses. If you want exact measuerments I can help you out with that, I have a short block in my garage with the crank and 5 pistons in it but no cam or front cover...

The reason he would only have FIVE pistons and no cover or camshaft would be MY fault! lol. with as fast as my fresh motor is coming together, its hard to break my mechanic away long enough to pop out a piston and rod from my other OTHER spare block for Vender's motor. *hangs head in shame til a camshaft and piston can be forked over*
You're looking at more than 120 lbs. Long blocks, which I carry home in the trunk of my T, weigh 320 lbs. Less the heads, I guess you have at least 250 lbs.
D@mn, no wonder I've got 3 blown lumbar disks! I had been carrying my block in and out of my shop and machine shop. I shudder to think what that old 327 block (yup, hand carried that one too) weighed! Guess we were all young and dumb once.
does it really weigh that much? geez I didn't think it was all that heavy. I was moving the short block all around by my self, didnt seem all that heavy.... oh well
The length (21") includes the snout on the front of the crank, so if you want just the block, hack off a couple inches. those measurements are not exact, as it was pretty difficult to get to the block. This did not include the oil pan...
