I have an '86 GN and for the last year I have had a problem with the 3rd brake light working every once in a while. I took apart the housing and changed the bulb plus cleaned up the contact the light rests on and still the same problem. I don't mind buying a new one but just wanted to make sure that is the problem before I shell out $50 for a new brake light and that not being it.
Thanks to all in advance for your time and help. I appreciate it!!!!!

did you trace the ground wire to where it screws to the body and check that?
and when you cleaned the contacts, did you bend them up a little bit so they push harder against the bulb?

I have to agree, the housing leaves a lot to be desired & can cause problems.

The most likely cause of your problem will be the switch on the brake pedal. The switch might need adjustment or the contacts need to be cleaned.

I've had to replace the switch 3 times to keep my 3rd brakelight working. Even the most recent replacement seems to have it's moments. For as simple of a switch as it is, it's surprising how often it fails. You can take the switch apart and clean the contacts with some emery cloth, that should do it.

Thanks for everyones input. I took the 3rd brake light apart and cleaned the contacts and made sure they were up against the light good. That didn't do it. Then I adjusted the switch for the brake pedal and I think that was the problem. I moved it back from the brake pedal a little and the light comes on every time now. Thanks again, hope I can help some one out in the near future!!! This site is great.
