After Mother Nature took another chunk out of the 2007 SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series with the rainout of the May 15th event, a large crowd of racers and fans returned to Gateway International Raceway to witness the first back-to-back victories by all three eliminator winners in the seventy-event history of SCSS competition. With atmospheric conditions similar to the last completed event on May 8th, (this week‘s corrected elevation ranged from 1725 feet above sea level to 1186 feet), the “bump spot” for the Super Sixteen program closely mirrored the 11.86 “bubble” of two weeks ago. However, the large field of entrants took full advantage of the “decent air” and no less than thirty-six percent of the drivers in attendance recorded career-best elapsed times or speeds!
While all three champions from the May 8th SCSS battle repeated their wins, it was Tim “Moose” Mallicoat who became only the second pilot to win three consecutive SCSS titles behind Brian Grote, who pushed his red 2001 Camaro to victories on April 19th, May 3rd, and May 10th, 2005. Moreover, Mallicoat’s M&M Automotive/Dale Huff Motorsports ‘68 Camaro unleashed a stunning series of runs which not only earned his fourth SCSS title but a spot in the SCSS record books, as well.
After winning the May 8th trophy, Mallicoat unloaded his black Chevy for testing during GIR’s Wednesday night program one night after the May 15th rainout. Based on his career-best 9.40-second, 140 mph numbers clocked on May 8th, the shock was understandable when the Collinsville, Illinois ace clocked a 9.00-second elapsed time coasting to a speed of only 118 miles per hour. The newfound power came from a 565-cubic inch big block Chevy tuned by Silva Bullet team captain Bill Silva--a ninety-seven cubic inch increase from the previous 468 residing under the Camaro’s hood. Still utilizing a single 1050cfm Dominator four-barrel carburetor without the aid of nitrous oxide, the engine made plenty of power but was restricted by a miscalculation in gear ratios. “We left the 4.56 gear in the car”, noted Mallicoat, “and it was hitting the RPM limiter only 1000 feet down track. I couldn’t drive it to the finish line so we took it home and changed it to a 4.10 gear”.
While the first twenty minutes of qualifying found SCSS superstar Tony Huff’s silver ‘68 Nova, (10.37/131.16), Chris Lugge’s red ‘98 Camaro, (a best-ever 10.53/131.27), and Jack Nungester’s slick black ‘71 Camaro, (a career-best 10.57/130.82), clocking big numbers, Mallicoat was ready for his own early pass. Armed with the new ratio, Mallicoat blasted off the starting line with a 1.33-second sixty-feet ET, charged to a 5.69/124.32 eighth-mile, and lit up GIR’s giant new Daktronics scoreboards with the third quickest and second fastest run in SCSS history, an 8.85 at 154.19 miles per hour for the quickest and fastest naturally-aspirated clocking in SCSS history by more than a half-second and ten miles per hour!
Only Huff could keep pace with Mallicoat’s performance, wheeling the other Silva Bullet team car to 9.58/140.30 and 9.22/144.09 efforts when the nitrous oxide was engaged. Of note were the 10.16/140.52 and 10.00/140.62 passes carded by the only MoPar ever to win a SCSS title, two-time finalist Jeff Bowman, whose 440-powered black ‘70 Dodge Charger behemoth was battling serious tire spin. “I can’t get a handle on these new drag radials”, lamented Bowman, “and even though I used the trans brake on the second run I still had to lift to get it to hook up”. Hal Marshall’s white S-10 pickup made three runs between 10.43/130.59 and 10.21/131.34 fill out the four qualifiers for eliminations but, as he did on May 8th, Marshall elected to concentrate on the Super Truck Showdown which allowed the first alternate into the SCSS semi-finals.
For the first time in SCSS history, both the first and second alternates, (the fifth and sixth qualifiers), had clocked identical elapsed times; both May 8th runner-up Ray Arthur’s “Suspicion” ‘67 Camaro and Jack Nungester’s ‘71 Camaro had run 10.474 seconds but, under NHRA rules, the better qualifying position is earned by the driver who recorded the fastest speed. In this case, Nungester’s 131.39 mph effort won out over Arthur’s 128.01 speed. Nungester, who finally qualified ahead of his son, Ben, by over three tenths of a second, was elated just to be in eliminations. “He finally out-spent me!”, joked Ben before he first round of eliminations. “My dad got me into racing. I remember when he brought home a basket-case ‘68 Camaro back when I was in high school and restored it from the ground up. He was really excited when I got my own Camaro into the ten-second zone. But, now he‘s outrunning me. That’s not a good sign!”.
Meanwhile, there was some concern in the Mallicoat camp. After a second qualifier of 8.87 at only 149.63 mph in which the new 565 sounded a bit ragged near the finish line, “It hit the rev limiter again”, said a mildly irritated Mallicoat, “but we have no idea why. It was fine on the first run. Now, I don’t know”. For the first round, Mallicoat was paired with third qualifier Bowman. After gaining a quarter-second holeshot, however, Bowman was again forced to get on and off the Charger’s throttle to find traction and Mallicoat’s 9.23/146.72 won over the Dodge’s 10.32/139.50. In the other semi-final pairing, Huff had, quite frankly, the run of his life. Using the third best Reaction Time in SCSS history, a brilliant 0.005, to holeshot and outrun Nungester’s Camaro, the winningest driver in SCSS racing hit a career-best 9.179 ET at 144.81 mph to advance to his eigthteenth final round in the past eighteen months. “That was to make up for that 0.460 I had last time!”, said Huff, referring to the dismal RT which caused Huff to lose on a massive 9.47/136 to 9.24/144 holeshot against Mallicoat on May 8th.
Returning to the pits, Silva began trying to diagnose the problem in Mallicoat’s Chevy which was now severe enough to have cost the defending event champ lane choice in the final round. After some frantic searching, Silva discovered the engine’s crank-trigger ignition wires were crossed. After switching the wires, Silva was confident the top-end miss would not return but still had reservations about other aspects of the engine. “This thing has an awful lot of timing in it”, said Silva, raising his eyebrows.
In the title bout, Silva watched as his two team entries staged up. Mallicoat gained a minuscule advantage off the starting line but the ignition gremlins disappeared and the black Camaro shot to an 8.91/153.79 against Huff’s 9.27/144.74 for its fourth SCSS victory in four final rounds. “It looks like the wires were the problem; it ran 7200 RPM at the stripe!”, said a smiling Huff during winner’s circle trophy presentations in front of the main grandstands. “Bill has been a huge help in this and I want to thank him. The car is flying now and I’m sure there’s more in it. He was helping Tony as much as he was helping me and his name is on that car so that says a lot”.
NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Where in the world was current point leader Tony Buhl? The mysterious absence of the reigning SCSS Season Champion was solved when it was discovered the Lebanon, Illinois, pro was enjoying a family vacation in Jamaica!…While Steve Geatley’s immaculate 383-inch ‘72 Chevelle and Jack Nungester’s showpiece Camaro were the sixtieth and sixty-first entries in the SCSS 10-Second Club, Geatley joined Ron Binger’s ‘69 350 Camaro, (12.10/120.38), Kenny Smith’s ’03 281 Mustang, (12.18/123.23), and Shunn Grace’s ’04 281 Mustang, (12.60/121.95), as the newest members of the 120 MPH Club, which now sports one hundred twenty-one members. Nungester and Chris Lugge also became the thirty-ninth and fortieth members of the 130 MPH Club…The event opened on the very first pair of early timed trials with the Battle of the Meek Family in which Ralph’s ‘68 302 Mustang scored a win over Carl’s ‘89 302 Mustang, 11.31/121.88 to 11.90/119.11. Ironically, both of the Luebbering, Missouri Ford racers never went quicker during qualifying although Ralph Meek did earn a Fastest Street Car Sticker by making the field in the thirteenth spot…George Wahby’s 350 LT1 Chevy-powered ’74 Pinto produced the event’s biggest wheelstands and hit a career-best 10.44/126.44 in early timed trials and ran 10.49/126.21 to qualify seventh before the past SCSS event winner broke a rearend…Racecar fabricator Dan Schell drove Charlie Vincel’s 408-inch 2002 Camaro to a great 10.53/128.80 during early timed trials but retired before the official qualifying period began…Kevin Meine’s ’69 Mustang won the event title and wrapped up the season championship in the Rankin Technical Institute Challenge…Rob Binger’s ’69 Camaro clocked a best of 12.10/120.38 during qualifying but reeled off an 11.74/120.89 in late timed trials…A large contingent of bi-state area F-Body enthusiasts used the event to mark the one-year anniversary of the passing on GIR regular Kevin Cady, whose widow Sue organized a meeting in Kevin’s memory. Many GM entries were seen sporting “KJC 1953-2006” on the rear window and several racers took Kevin‘s helmet on full-throttle quarter-mile rides…Michelle Carneglio was the quickest of the six-cylinder entries, taking the MMC Racing 2004 Nissan 350Z to a best of 13.33/104.40 only three thousandths of a second ahead of Dwight Seaton’s ’87 Buick Grand National, (which had top-end problems and could only muster a best of 13.33 at 80 mph). The fastest six-banger was Bobby Elllis’ 195-inch 2005 Chrysler Crossfire at 13.66/105.69…After a decade of begging, GIR track manager Jason Dukes has finally divided the waterbox burnout area in each lane. Drivers now have the option of using water for burnouts or driving to the inside of the waterbox to avoid the water entirely.

RU Rick Howie, O'Fallon, IL 1992 112 Civic 0.091 11.985 117.05
For the second consecutive event, Adnan Omerovic and Rick Howie battled for the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown Series trophy and, for the second time, Omerovic’s black Eagle Talon produced astonishing elapsed times and speeds en route to the win. Only a few fans realized, however, that Adnan’s blistering 11.16-second qualifying effort was not the quickest run of his career.
After his amazing 11.38/136.55 effort on May 8th, Omerovic appeared for GIR’s brand-new Super Series on Friday, May 18th, and entered the new Supercharged Showdown Eliminator which permits turbocharged applications. Omerovic’s first timed trial during the event was an incredible 11.08 at another 136 mph top end but, just after launching on his second pass, the Talon broke one the stock Eagle axles used on the car. “The guys at HillCo in St. Louis fix almost all my drivetrain stuff”, said Adnan, “and they’re the reason I was even able to get it here for tonight’s event”. Omerovic’s first run, only eight minutes into qualifying, was the aforementioned 11.16 at 133.35 mph.
Howie, whose turbocharged 2.0-litre Acura-powered ’94 Civic hatchback won the April 17th title before losing to Omerovic on May 8th, opened qualifying with a best-ever 11.84/118.62 and proceeded to clock no less than four more eleven-second runs to not only qualify for the Sport Tuner final round but anchor the Super Sixteen field, as well. “It seems like the first run is always the quickest with this car”, said Howie, “It was spinning a little on the later runs but I think the heat gets to the motor a bit, too”. Phil Hoback, whose black RX7 became the second-fastest rotary in STSS history during the May 8th event, qualified third at 12.02 with a tremendous 127.17 mph top end but, in late timed trials after the conclusion of qualifying, unloaded an 11.92 at a ****ping 128.20 mph. The only other qualifier under thirteen seconds was longtime STSS campaigner and past event winner Andy Lemons with a 12.95/113.69 from his 2004 SRT-4 Neon. Bill Simpson‘s notorious yellow Toyota MR2 hit 13.19/107.42 followed by Lee Hanson’s red RX7 at 13.30/112.89.
The final round was much closer then the numbers would indicate. Although Omerovic got to the finish line 55.28 feet ahead of Howie, the white Honda was in the lead for most of the quarter-mile. Ahead by 9.1 feet at the sixty-feet mark, 13.2 feet at the 330-feet cone, and 16.7 feet at the eighth-mile, it wasn’t until Omerovic’s massive top end kicked in that the tide turned for Howie. By the 1000-feet mark, the black Talon had shot around the hatch to a 15.2-feet lead and Omerovic held on for an 11.69/133.21 to 11.98/117.05 decision. “I still really want to get into the tens”, said Adnan while accepting his sixth STSS winner’s trophy, “and I think it’ll happen pretty soon. It’s just a matter of getting everything to work at the same time”.

On April 18th, 2006, Hal Marshall beat Mark Carneglio for the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown title by an 11.53 to 12.47 count. Suddenly, everything‘s the same except everybody‘s running one second quicker.
Hal Marshall‘s slew of ten-second runs from his 383-inch ‘86 S-10 pickup during qualifying was impressive but Carneglio, whose well-known MMC Racing ‘03 Ford Lightning had run as quick as 11.50s in late 2006 testing, drew equal crowd response with a best of 11.67/114.94 which not only made the Super Truck final round but qualified fourteenth in the Super Sixteen field. The only machines close to the O‘Fallon, Missouri, racer were Randy Christy, Junior’s yellow ‘99 360 Dakota, (which ran a career-best 12.78 at 106.78), and Bill Gallahue’s awesome Viper V10-powered Dodge Ram SRT-10, (an off-pace 13.10/107.21).
It was Carneglio’s second time racing at Gateway in the past five days. Wheeling the Nissan 350Z of his wife and racing partner, Michelle, at the inaugural Supercharged Showdown event, (and finishing third), Carneglio was hoping for another dip into the mid-elevens against Marshall in the final. “The truck definitely improved when I switched from a Whipple to a Kenne-Bell”, said Mark, referring the supercharger switch he performed last fall, “but I’m going to need an 11.50 just to stay within a second of Hal”. True to form, Marshall maintained his 10.2-second qualifying pace in the trophy dash to clock a 10.24 at a career-best 131.82 mph while Carneglio’s Ford spun off the line and slowed to a 12.00/116.76. Marshall, appearing in his landmark thirtieth final round and scoring his twenty-third victory, summed up his new racing philosophy. “After all the stuff we’ve broken, I think we’ve learned to just leave it alone when it’s winning”, said Hal, “and that seems to working just fine“.
