I saw this at a car show this weekend. Never have seem / heard of this. Anyone have any info on it? Can anyone confirm it? This car had 96 RPO codes!

For a car they only made 2000 of, 500 NASCAR editions would be 1/4 of all of them. Plus, It's not in any of the books I've ever read.
That luggage rack is pretty humerous. I mean these trunks are ginormous already I can't imagine how much the wife would be bringing along to need an extra luggage rack!

Pretty evident all of those emblems are glued on and don't even match each other. But at least the guy is "trying" to make it out to be something. But a good laugh none the less.....

I totally agree with all of you. He actually had some hand typed pages of info (pics), and I don't think he was trying to fraudulently pass this off as something it wasn't, I just think he was misinformed from the previous owner from 1993. I talked to this guy for quite sometime, and he was rally cool, just misinformed. (hence the 1/4mile times of 7.8-8.0 seconds) To give this car some credit....what do you think of the (96) RPO codes?? This has to be at the top of the list for the most optioned car that I have ever seen. Kirban himself says no car he has ever seen topped (100) RPO codes. I think the record is (98)...?

I think we need more than a trophy shop engraved tag and a super glued on patch on the ash tray door. Never heard of such a thing from GM and it being the first one of the 500. I was born at night, but not last night.

I'm glad the guy was enjoying his "find" and who am I to spoil his dream? Looks like a nice cruiser but if it were mine I'd loose the luggage rack first thing.

Someone needs a Louisville Slugger to the nuts for putting a luggage rack on a GN.

Carshows always bring out the cream of the crop of dingbats & weirdos.

That sucks, I just inspected my 84 and found no luggage rack. So I guess I have no Nascar Truckster.

I believe as well this NASCAR edition never existed but until yesterday I didn't know there were two TR's that existed that were govt test mules for Methonal. One of the two were at the Nats. Very cool.

I believe it was 5 meth test cars. His "papers" says it was a dealer promotion, so 1 dealer sold 25% of all the 84's....hmmmm

Just want to clarify... we are talking about (2) different "types" of cars here. (1) A" NASCAR " edition ( that never existed ) that I saw at a car show this past weekend in Ponte Vedra, Florida. (2) A "methanol test car" that David saw this weekend in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

I'm still curious what you guys think about the car I saw.. never mind the "NASCAR" we all know that was not an RPO code / option. BUT the car had 96 RPO codes. This has to be one of the most optioned 1984 cars we have seen?? I know Dennis said he has never seen a TR that had 100 RPO codes.

Different years had different codes available and not all of course are option codes, many are for stock equipment.

1987 has fewer codes available than 1986 I believe for GN's, I had a list once somewhere with the differences in code numbers that were possible between the years.

Perhaps, back in 1984 more factory build codes were on the sticker than later years?

But still it's a very highly optioned car someone ruined. ;)o_O

I once met a guy who said his GNx came from factory with GN emblem on pass side Trunk lid.

I can't post a link, but this car is in barnfinds.com. Search Buick grand national and you'll find it.

Yeah I seen it somewhere before. I think a magazine maybe. I would buy a dealer model with just the side billboards?

Kirban Thoughts:

A forum reader alerted me to this post.....one thing is clear this is a well loaded car with 96 codes on the SPID label. That much is fact. Unusual no codes for steel drum brakes ore aluminum in other words J41 or J42. Not sure without seeing other 84 SPID labels if those codes were omitted.

Working on the assumption they did make 500 it would clearly stand to reason that at some point in the last 25 plus years at least several others would have surfaced. Also if it was the real deal it somehow would have been noted on the SPID label.

One reason when I had Molly come to sign cars I gave it alot of thought to avoid fraud years later so Molly signed the actual SPID label the two times he came to my events. Heck we even had people bring their trunk lid if their car was not running. One can only guess what those signed turbo regals will be valued at in years to come. I know fewer than 300 are signed by Molly.

Here is a story similar to this one. Maybe 5 years ago I was at a small Pontiac show in New Jersey. I was set up as a vendor. Another vendor was there had a bunch of dealership items. One was a framed illustration showing two 1964 GTOs. He claimed it was a factory dealer picture. I explained to him it was not. I told him the reason I know this is because I had the artwork done years ago and sold it. He was still not convinced making it harder was the fact he never heard of me. Even after a few GTO owners told him who I was he still insisted it was a factory Pontiac print he bought at a dealership.

I figured it would be a lost cause to keep arguing so I walked away to my car....then it dawned on me I always put my license plate in any artwork I had done. The print showed the plate A MOVER. Talk about dumb luck the vehicle I had with me that day was one that I had that same license plate on A MOVER. I went back over and said to the seller I got some pretty effective proof that that print was one I had done and told told him to come over and look at my license plate on my car.....

I ended up buying the print since I did not have one in my collection at a cheaper price.....true story

sorry if I got off the topic slightly....but the story is similar to the one posted here.

Point being if 500 were built....surely others would have surfaced over the years.
