I have a 1984 that I plan on restoring, over the summer, however My question is that the car has a vinyl top roof, is there any way I can remove the vinyl and have a smooth top, or will I have a problem doing that? If not is there anywhere I can buy a vinyl top to replace this one?

I am also looking to get the car repainted, the car has 88K miles on it, and has a little surface rust on the hood and trunk lid, however it is a solid car. I was wondering if you guys can tell me what a decent paint job will cost, black paint of course.

I have always loved these cars, and the car is the same age as me. Means alot to restore one of the few classics of the 80's.

If you remove the top you will have a small amount of prep to do. Remove the glue and smooth the area where the top and the quarters meet. Should be about it. I would suggest going to an interior shop and have a new top installed by a pro, if you decide to put the top back on. I would replace the top.:)

Thanks for your help, yeah now that I think about it the vinyl top is kinda cool, and it would be alot easier to have a shop replace it. I had a 87 cutlass supreme, that had a perfect original top on it, and I loved that car, too bad it got hit. Oh well the T type is alot faster, it just needs a little work, then it will be the garage queen.

If you do decide to remove the vinyl you will also need to replace the quarter glass with solid top versions and the vertical drip moldings on the B pillars. Also the back window needs to be reworked so the reveal moldings can be attached. Be carefull because water likes to sit under the vinyl and cause rust spots. I would suggest you make sure and take care of any rust problems reguardless of which way you go.
