I'd like to thank everyone that was able to help in regards to my backfiring problem. This past weekend I found out what was causing it...it ended up being the fuel pump and I also changed the filter as well and put new spark plugs and wires. So...it's no longer backfiring and it's slowly starting to sound like a Grand National.

After doing these minor adjustments and starting the car up...it sounded fine...but once it warmed up a little and I hit the gas...it makes a sound...and hesitates a little, not near as bad as before...and without the backfiring...but the noise is something I can't discribe. Sorta like an air sucking sound...like it's starving for air. When the car is cold...it rev's up great and there's no hestitation...it's only when it's hot that it sounds weird and hesitates. So...if anyone has any idea as to what may be causing this...let me know. Please and thank you.

Maybe check for a vaccum leak or and exhaust leak before the turbo - check the headers. This can cause weird problems and are a pretty easy fix, just get 'um welded up!

I don't know what kind of condition yours is in but mine was in pretty poor shape, it was slightly abused and not reugularly taken care of before i got it. The Fuel injection harness was all burnt up because of being in close proximity to the turbo. This was greating a huge hesitation, not smooth running, low power and a lean "pop" in the exhause when it was hot during medium accleration. replaced same stuff you did and it cleared up for a while, but eventually came back. Finially found out this happens alot on these hotairs and got it replaced. and fixed the cracked manifolds on both sides and car runs much smoother and no hesitiation. If it wheren't for the suck gas i have to deal with out in west texas, and no money (in college) I'd be putting up some serious times. mine has 125k miles on it. so I'm sure the cam is warn down some, that doesn't help much either. hoped this might help youwith yours.

2fst4u, do you still have the stock air filter box on your car or have you already put on a K&N cone filter??? If you've got the K&N, you will hear that "sucking" sound more than you did with the stock air box...

Do the IAC reset procedure...Do you have a scantool??? If you don't, then you really need to get one...It will help diagnose all kinds of problems...

If you have an out in the open air filter, it will make a LOUD noise when running. This is due to the throttle body being before the turbo. To quiet things down, look into a cold air system such as the one from Kenny Bell. It has a box that fits around the filter and draws air from under the front bumper.

I had a similar problem with my 85, (see more ^#%&* problems thread) open air filter will make more noise, but look at the EGR pipe, left mine loose like a moron and I had many similar conditions as yours.
