recently just bought a grand national thats been sitting for a bit. the car ran but not well missing at higher rpms. changed the plugs and car idles better but once i go half throttle or full it just shutters and misses. i was thinking the cat might have been clogged so i took it off keeping it open downpipe. well after doing that it still misses and shutters and i also notice im not hearing and turbo whistle out the exhaust. iv owned a turbo car once before and have always heard it out the exhaust but not the grand national. any help would be great anybody.

Sounds like the coil pack and or module. I would double check the cam sensor to by starting the car then unpluging the cam sensor if it still happens could be my first guess. If it is the coil or module you can buy a caspers tool to test it just to be safe or buy a brand new one.

Shouldn't I hear the turbo through the exhaust? Would a seized turbo make the car run like crap

Good question.
How much boost and rpm did you get up to, AND, do you have a scantool? :confused:

Rpm goes to redline and boost gauge goes up a couple notches on the cluster. But like I said open downpipe and no turbo sound at all. At wide open throttle it just bogs and shutter

Here is some friendly advice :cool: ;
1. Update your profile location as Charlie already suggested ;)
2. Get a scan tool and read the sticky, and all associated links.
3. Read the responses carefully, and try to respond to the questions people ask. Without info, there will not be much help.
4. Do NOT get into the throttle to hear any "turbo whine", until you get;
5. A member with a scan tool.
6. A scan tool that you know how to use.
7. Completed the spring cleaning.

PS;
Pay no attention to the lights on the dash.
They are for reference only, and notoriously inaccurate. :eek:

i started the car and then pulled off the maf plug wile it was running and it raised the rpms still missing during this. then i plugged it back in and car almost stalled then raised the rpms and the car still is missing.

85 gn help please

hi
if you know anybody with a good maf sensor try it on your car se if it makes a difference.

When you unplug the maf it causes the car to run rich. If you think it's the maf with it pluged in at idle tap on it if it revs high or idled funny it's the maf. What I would do is unplug the cam sensor after the car is running and take it for a ride. If the problem is still there you've just ruled out any sensor by unpluging the cam sensor. Then I would test the coil and module.

I just reread you first post and thought of something. What type of plugs did you put in and what are they gapped at? It might just be that you need to tighten up the gap on them.

acdelco and i didnt gap them..... but no one has answered my question shouldnt i hear my turbo making some sort of noise. cause i hear nothing at all.

This may help. When my car was stock there was no hissing sound at idle. I suspect the stock air box and CAT muffled up the hissing sound. Now that I have a cold air kit and a tests pipe my car hisses really noticable through the cold air intake under the drivers side headlight. Stock or upgraded turbo. No sound out of the exhaust with or without the CAT. Mufflers cover it up on my setup. Brad

got it

so turbo was seized. popped it free with a screw driver and it barley has any shaft play but just a tad. started the car it squealed really loud so i turned it off. then tried it again and it was spinning freely. car runs alot better now

You need to find out why it seized. No oil flow getting to it? Verify oil is flowing through it. If it seizes again, it could send parts into your engine, so be very wary.

witte, where do you live in sussex? Im in hopatcong, and I work at the sussex vo-tech... We can meet up sometime and troubleshoot a few things if you like!!!
