i have a 85 riv t type and i aim having som problems it starts and runs but when you try to get on it a little it starts bucking and missing real bad i had this problem for a while i got pissed one day and held my foot in it and blew a head gasket so i pulled the motor and fixed that and put all new vac lines on put it back in and still the same i checked the fuel pressure and its abot 45 when i try to get on it and 35 at idle i took the cat off and hollowed it out still no help any ideas it has no check engine light on so im kinda lost im a good tech but no clue on a turbo car lol

when i bought my 85 gn it did the same thing, after replacing ciols, plugs, wires, etc. as it turned out ,it was over- boosting(head gasket blowing is your first clue)the older models should have an adjustable wastgate, try adjusting it(i cant remember which way to turn, someone here with more knowledge can help)tripple check that all vaccum lines arent leaking...hope this helps...

Whats fuel pressure with vacuum line off at idle? Does fuel pressure go up with boost? You got your fuel pressure regulator connected to the intake pressure line(boost)? What boost gauge are you going by? Do you have a knock gauge or scan tool? Some idle reading would be good. -Nick.

ok with vacume line off at idle its 42 and yes it goes up with bost as good as i can tell couse it starts bucking so bad i get out of it as far as a boost gage i installed a low pressure psi gage to the map sencer tap

It should, I am not familar with the turbo riv's. Use it to make sure your idle reading are good.......TPS, IAC, MAF. Boost is only going to 6 lbs. on an aftermarket gauge? Were you located at anyways? -Nick.

ok i got it running 90 percent better i put a real good set of wires on it and fliped the 2 wastgate lines around and its running pretty good just bucks wonce in a while now only at wot going to put some r43ts plugs in and gap to 35 and see what happens

What is boost at now? Was wastegate hooked up wrong?
Make sure your idle readings are good, otc 4000 shows all of these: http://www.gnttype.org/maint/quickref.html
Get you otc 4000 on there and see if your getting knock. Feather the gas until you get to WOT and see if you get any knock. I just take off at part throttle and increase the gas pedal slowly to see how high my boost is going at 1/4 throttle, 1/2, 3/4, and WOT and monitor knock.
Once you are sure your not getting knock and idle reading are good. Go out and get up to 50 mph and then stab the throttle and watch your OTC 4000 for what your 02 volts are at WOT. Should be between .760 - .780. Will give you an idea if your running rich or lean. Need more fuel or might be able to run more boost.
Not sure what your bucking is at WOT. Knock? Could be those plugs you havent changed yet.
I would get a knock gauge in that beast to compliment your boost gauge. Something you can always have in there to tell you what is going on.
Whatever you do, make sure your not getting any knock in any gear.
I was hoping you were closer, I have never seen a turbo riv.

Boost?

anyone have any idea how much boost this thing should have stock? i hooked a 15 lb psi gauge to the map sensor and it pegged it out.....did i hook it up wrong or do i need a special gauge??....also the vacuum hose routing to the wastegate actuator is different on this board than it is on my emissions sticker...any idea what's up with that?

Try to turn your boost down and see if it comes down on the gauge. 15lbs. of boost is pretty high for a hot air(12lbs. stockish). I would think that is the stubbling your feeling at WOT.......knock. Hook up that OTC 4000, learn how to use it before you rebuild this thing agian. Turn the boost down by making the wastegate rod LONGER!! Don't get into WOT until your idle settings are good and your boost is down around 10lbs. as a starting point!!!

You have the two port wastegate actuator like on the 84/85 GN's? How are the lines run? One port runs to the vacuum block(this one doesn't have to be hooked up to work) and the other port runs from the boost source off the turbo. Are you still using the stock "Y" fitting with the restrictor in it? This is a fitting that is found between the routing of line to the wastegate actuator and solenoid. Are you running the stock wastegate solenoid still?
GET A KNOCK GAUGE, save your motor.

thanks 1quick85 i couldnt remember which way to adjust rod to reduce boost(its been about seven years since ive owned a hot air car with an hot air motor),like he said he's pegging out a 15 lb guage, theres no telling how many lbs are acutually there, hence the blown head gasket before.i spent about 30 min that day fine tuning that actuator rod on the wastgate of mine but when i was done car ran perfectlly from then on...

Once you get the rod set at a save boost level for everyday driving......no matter how hot outside it is. You shouldn't have to touch it and shouldn't have to worry about headgaskets. ;)

the thing is...i was looking at my wastegate rod and it doesn't have an adjusment...no threads or anything, it's one solid piece

can you take a pic of the turbo and wastegate and post so the pros can look to see if its the right setup?im 90% sure its supposed to be adjustable, this is where you need to start making car right,i have an 84 riv t (not runnig parts car)ill go check it out too after lunch...

i don't know why it wouldn't be what it's supposed to...the car is all original right down to the paint

some pics

on my riv the rod is not adjustable....

top vac hose t's to port on turbo and elec. syl control.

bottom vac line goes strait to vac block at intake/throttle body...hope THIS helps...
